GRANT, Robert Richard “Rick” . September 4, 1948 – August 27, 2021
It is with heavy hearts that we announce Rick’s passing surrounded by his family at the Hamilton General Hospital on Friday, August 27, 2021 in his 73rd year. Rick Grant beloved husband to Mary (Hammond) for 52 years. Loving father to Jeff and Heather (Owen), and proud grandpa to Ella. Cherished brother to Dale (Jim) Ellerby and Marlene (Bill) Millar. Uncle to Kendra Millar and Connie (Brandon & son Kyler) Lymburner. Brother-in-law to Larry (Linda) Hammond, Joan (late Ron) Atkinson, Stanley (Jenny) Hammond, Ralph (Deidre) Hammond, Irene (late Rod) Lockhart, late David (Belinda) Hammond, and Jim Hammond. Lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews, including his Godson, Gerrit Hammond. Reunited with his mother Thelma (Eagles) and father Robert “Bob”, as well as mother and father-in-law Florence and Carson Hammond.
Rick was a hard-working man, who took great pride in his job at Haldimand County. He enjoyed the camaraderie amongst his fellow coworkers, often playing witty tricks on one another. He worked overtime all year long in order to ensure his family would have a special Christmas each year. He enjoyed nothing more than to crack a cold can of Pepsi, light a “smoke” and complete the daily crossword puzzle. Other spare time was spent watching the birds he’d feed each day. Rick’s heart was overjoyed when his granddaughter, Ella, was born. She would comb his hair, and they would take turns scratching each other’s back.
Rick was a private man. He kept a lot of things to himself and shared sparingly. One of the times he was awaiting an ambulance ride to ER, he pointed out a tiny piece of paper hidden in a little red cup on the desk shelf. He told his daughter that “if things went south” she was to remember that bit of paper. His daughter reassured him they would not need that today. Before his pacemaker surgery, he said again, “don’t forget the red cup”. Again, fighting through tears, she responded “we’re not going to need that today”. Finally, the day before his passing, Rick called his daughter and again reminded her of the red cup. “I know, daddy”:
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free.
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call;
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of day.
If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss;
Ah yes, these things, I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savoured much;
Good friends, good times,
A loved one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seems all too brief,
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wanted me now, He set me free.
