James « Jim » Curran, of Hanover, passed away peacefully at Hanover and District Hospital on Monday, August 23, 2021 with his loving children by his side. He was 85.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland on October 11, 1935 to the late James and Jane, “Jean” (nee Jeffery) Curran. There he spent the first years of his life during the end of WWII having been evacuated to Rothsay to “escape the bombs”. He later apprenticed in trades and at the urging of his mother left home for Canada where his Aunt Helen would take him in. Jim arrived by boat to New York City at age 17 and made his way to Toronto and eventually Fenlon Falls. Soon after, he enlisted in the Canadian Army and was trained in radio communications at Royal Military College Kingston. He met the love of his life and forever dancing partner, Elinor, in St. John’s NL and married there on December 31, 1960. Better known as Jim or Jimmy B, he worked for Marconi and Company, then moving to Montreal to start their family together. Eventually, the pair decided to settle in Hanover in 1972 where he worked as a member of the opening team at Telesat Allan Park’s earth station until his retirement. Great friends and countless memories were made in both Hanover and their winter home of 27 years in Clearwater, Florida. Jim was known to some as a piper having played at the annual Remembrance Day celebrations, weddings and other events around town. He served as Pipe Major with the Hanover Pipes and Drums for many years and travelled North America and beyond showcasing the great talent to hail from small town Ontario. Jim was a faithful member of the Royal Canadian Legion for nearly 50 years and was sure to be the life of any party. He will be fondly remembered by many as a man with an infectious smile, a great singing voice, and for his kind and gentle nature.
Loved by son Andrew (Christine) Curran of Guelph and devoted daughter Heather Curran (Jeff) of Hanover. Dearly loved grandpa of Patrick (Jenna), Kathleen and Matthew and so many nieces, nephews and extended family. Dotingly remembered by his wee sister Maureen Wilson of Hanover. Predeceased by his beloved wife Elinor (nee Cole) Curran and his aunt Helen Jeffrey.
To honour his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private inurnment will be held in Newfoundland – reuniting with his beloved dancing partner.
Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Grey Bruce or the Legion Poppy Campaign are appreciated as expressions of sympathy. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Mighton Funeral Home, Hanover.
