PRATT, Brian
Brian Pratt passed away on August 20, 2021 in Saskatoon, SK at the age of 83 after a prolonged struggle with dementia. He was an intelligent, well-read, highly principled man and a capable provider whose blind dedication to family was second to none. Brian was born in Kindersley, SK in 1937. He was raised in Lanigan, SK where he met his wife, Shirley Pratt (nee Chappell). They were married in 1958, had three children and stayed together until Shirley died of cancer in 1994. His second partner was Jenifer Downer. They enjoyed intellectual dialogue, spending time with family, singing with Joy of Vox Chorus and travelling to Europe. Brian received a Bachelor of Science in engineering physics and a Master of Science in engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. He was one of the world’s first computer scientists, initially specializing in statistical and quantitative analysis and operations research. Brian was a management consultant for the majority of his working life, working for firms like Hillis/Hickling-Johnston, Western Management Consultants and his own private company, Pratt Management. He also spent some time with the Indian Claims Commission. He was a lifelong investor, entering into varied business partnerships with his two brothers-in-law. Their investment adventures included partial ownership of a gold mine in Yukon Territory, a PGA golf course in Arizona and real estate in Texas. Some of his life achievements and activities included pilot training with the Royal Canadian Air Force where he flew in Harvard training planes, helping to found and operate the Saskatoon Open School and racing his beloved Sea Spray as a member of the Saskatoon Sailing Club at Redberry Lake. He built a cabin nestled in the trees at Emma Lake that is still being enjoyed by his family. Brian is survived by his common law spouse Jenifer Downer, his children Mike (Wendy) Pratt, Colleen (Gerald) Hauer, Sean Pratt and his sister Lois Pratt Martin. He also leaves behind numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren who affectionately referred to him as GPa. There will be no funeral or memorial. The family will be having an informal gathering at a date to be determined. Arrangements in care of Aimé Laventure – Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
