Obituary for Betty Borger
It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that my Mom, Betty Borger, passed away on August 11, 2021, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 82. My heartfelt thanks goes to the people of Shalom Village in Hamilton who cared for her with such compassion and good cheer these past few years. You are super heroes! Betty will be sorely missed by her children, Marika and Michael, her son-in-law, Gary and her grandchildren: Luke Patey and Riley and Brendan Borger. She goes to join her husband, Horst, who passed away last year of pancreatic cancer. Betty met Horst at the Germania Club in Hamilton in 1963 while on a visit from Scotland. It must have been quite a meeting: she never went back! She raised 2 children, looked after the house, did the books for Borger Display and worked endlessly on the props. Horst was the best window dresser around— he stayed that way because of all the work Betty did behind the scenes. Later in life came grandchildren and one would be hard-pressed to find a prouder Granny—then came Alzheimer’s and it all trickled away: Alzheimer’s is, indeed, pitiless and implacable. If you are reading this obituary, stop right now and give your loved ones a hug. Tell them that you love them. Life is too short. It always seems too short. It seems appropriate to end this with a quote my Mom used when her Mom, Annie, passed away:
“ It was a splendid idea….and it worked!”
