OTTAWA – Lieutenant Colonel John Robert “Bob” Wojcik, Ret’d, 73, Ottawa, formerly of Stellarton, died May 12, 2021, in the Ottawa General Hospital, Ottawa.
Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late John and Nellie (Hughes) Wojcik. Bob graduated from Stellarton High School in 1966. During his High School years, he participated in basketball, Safety Patrol, Speech Festivals, Curling, Allied Youth, Class Prophecy, Yearbook Staff, Scouts including Queen Scouts, Air Cadets, Glider Training and obtained his Small Aircraft Pilot License. From 1967 – 1969 he was Officer Cadet J. R. Wojcik in the R.O.T.P at Acadia University, Wolfville where he studied Applied Science in Engineering. 1969 – 1971 he studied at the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology, Halifax, obtaining his Bachelor of Engineering. 1971 – 1973 Lieutenant J. R. Wojcik was stationed at CFB Shearwater. From 1974 – 1976, Captain Wojcik was stationed at AMDU CFB Trenton, Ontario and from 1976 – 1978 at CFB Shearwater,
From 1978 – 1980 Major Wojcik studied at the Cranfield Institute of Technology, England and obtained his Masters in Aeronautical Engineering Aircraft Design and Structures. 1980 – 1983 he was stationed at the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment, OC Aircraft Structures and Mechanical CFB Cold Lake, Alberta and from 1983 – 1986 again at CFB Shearwater. He received Award of Recognition for, 1986 – 1989 Specialist in Sea King Helicopters, H-3 MGB CZAR US Navy Pensacola, Florida, USA; United States Achievement Medal from the Admiral of the Navy, Recognition from US Pacific Fleet. From 1989 – 1995 Lieutenant Colonel Wojcik was DGAEPM Weapon System Manager, Sea King Helicopters, Maritime Command Atlantic, Ottawa. In 1995 Lieutenant Colonel J. R. Wojcik retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force after a much-loved career. Post retirement, he led a team of contractors working with DAS Eng Airworthiness specialists in rewriting the Airworthiness policy for the Canadian Forces. He was the lead for several years in developing what would become the modern-day Technical Airworthiness Manual, the “TAM”. This was to be one of his ‘greatest achievements’ as DGAEPM as the technical side of the Canadian Air Force were transitioning to greater Contractor support for fleet management and needed to provide a new Airworthiness regime similar to that used by Transport Canada. While Bob’s career was ‘similar to many of his peers’ careers, he stands out from the crowd as having been so approachable, professional and always willing to take the extra time to help out in any way he could. “His door was always open” as cited by a close friend and colleague.
Surviving are his wife, Gloria VanAllen; daughters, Lisa, Lori and Jennifer, and their mother, Hope; grandchildren, Brooklynn and Oliver; sister, Linda Wojcik; niece, Melanie Andrecyk; nephew, John Wojcik.
A service was held in Vanier, Ontario.
