Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Herbert George Jones (George) on January 9th, 2021. He was predeceased by his parents, Casson and Carrie Jones, sisters Rowena (Taylor), Doris (Kinden), brothers Hollis and Walter and his first wife Sarah (Snow). He will be missed by his loving wife Marie and his four children; sons Brian (Nadya), Sean, and daughters Carrie and Barbara (Ron) and grandson Jared, as well as many extended family and lifelong friends. He was a kind, gentle, loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He will be in our hearts and memories forever and always.
George grew up in Point Of Bay, Nfld. and went to vocational school in St. John’s. After earning his Certificate in Motor Vehicle Repair in 1959 he moved to Schefferville, Quebec to work for the upstart Iron Ore Company of Canada. There, he married Sarah Snow and together they had children Carrie and Brian. He moved on to Labrador City and later married Marie Best, bringing Sean and Barbara into the family.
George’s passion was mechanics, he was resolved to find and fix virtually any problem with any type of engine from a dump-truck diesel to a tiny chainsaw. He was an avid power-sportsman who regularly travelled to the cottage by boat in the summer and by snowmobile in the winter. At heart he was a problem solver and he was known to be able to fix just about anything he put his mind to. With a partner, he started his own business, Wabush Marine and Sports, selling and repairing Snowmobiles, Motorcycles, Boats, and the like. Later he went on to work with friends and colleagues at Hewlett Minpaco doing the same.
After his retirement George and Marie moved to Ottawa and they enjoyed life by travelling regularly as snowbirds. He spent the winter months first in Quartzsite, Arizona and later in ZephyrHills, Florida. Over the years he travelled all across Canada and the United States where he met and befriended many people.
