Obituary of Fred Penner
It is with heavy hearts and gratitude for a life well lived, that the family of Fred Penner announce his passing on August 7, 2021 at his home in Three Hills.
Frederick David Penner was born on October 7, 1935 to David and Annie Penner (Nee Harder) in Swalwell Alberta. He lived and worked on the farm near Swalwell and attended the Swalwell school.
Fred met Barbara when he had appendicitis and was admitted to the Three Hills Hospital, and she worked as a nurse’s assistant. They were married on September 14, 1957. Their first son Lorne was born and they moved to Calgary for Fred to attend University. After completing the one-year teacher’s training they moved to Orkney where Fred taught in the one-room schoolhouse and they lived in a teacherage on the same property. A year later they moved to Linden so Fred could teach in the Linden School.
Their third move was back to Three Hills and Fred taught school at the Three Hills School. His passion was to teach junior high and his favorite subject was math. He taught for 14 years before leaving to farm full-time. During the teaching years he and Barb had two more sons, Lyle and Larry. It was during this time that he also co-owned a butcher shop with his brother George.
Fred and Barb moved to the farm they lived at for over 50 years, north of Three Hills and owned a mixed operation of grain, pigs and chickens. They didn’t have much time to get away, but they enjoyed hosting many groups of family and friends over the years. There was always a cup of coffee and a homemade snack if you stopped in on them unexpectedly and of course many meals shared around the table.
Fred enjoyed being involved in the community by serving on numerous boards including the Gas Co-op, Bethel Fellowship Church, and Lilydale.
Fred leaves behind and will be dearly missed by his wife Barbara of 64 years, his 3 sons Lorne (Rita), Lyle, and Larry (Marianne), his brothers Lloyd (Laura), George (Lil), Bob (Edith), Jerry (Mildred) and Ernie (Claudette), his sisters-in-law Gertie Crawford, and Bonnie (Alex) Cunningham. His Grandchildren Tabitha Penner, Rachel (Stephen) Musselwhite, Stephanie Penner (Victor), and Luke Penner (Sydney), Kimberly (Greg) Beres, Blaine (Brittany) Penner, and Jessica Penner. Great-Grandchildren Ocean Kalala, Oslo and Eloise Musselwhite, and Taryn and William Beres. He was predeceased by his parents David and Annie, his in-laws Clarence and Kaleida Crawford, sister Linda, brother-in-law Les Crawford, sisters-in-law Marie Sommerville and her husband Hugh, Joan Stroschein and her husband Ken.
As per Fred’s wishes, a small graveside service will be held at the Three Hills Cemetery for invited guests on Tuesday August 10th. Memorial donations may be made to Bethel Fellowship Church, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
Nos plus sincères sympathies à la famille et aux amis de Fred Penner 2021..
