CHAPMAN, Donna Louise (Matheson) –
With much sadness we announce the passing of our Mother Donna (born January 26, 1940) on July 31, 2021, at the age of 81. A teacher, loyal friend and wife, and a wonderfully devoted mother, she lived a rich and colourful life.
Donna was born to parents Robert Matheson and Helen (England) in Edmunston N.B. Settling in Toronto with her Mother, sister Joan and brother Bobby, she attended Northern Secondary and Lawrence Park Collegiate, where, as cheerleader, she met the love of her life Allan (pre-deceased 2017). They had a wonderful marriage for more than 55 years.
After attending Teachers College, Donna taught primary school at Finch Avenue Public School. It was during Teacher College that Donna met some of her most cherished lifelong friends – fondly known as the ‘Bridge Club’. Donna retired early from teaching to focus on raising her three children and supporting her husband’s career.
In addition to working for the Bank of Canada every Autumn and teaching ESL in the evenings, Donna contributed to society through her work with various charities including Big Sister Thrift, The Red Cross and alongside Peggy Massie coordinating The Upper Stoney Lake Regatta for many years.
In Toronto Donna could be found working out regularly or skating with her ladies group at The Granite Club. An avid water skier and boater, and enthusiastic skier, golfer, and figure skater, Donna enjoyed sports for the fun and camaraderie.
The family spent every summer at Stoney Lake – where Donna and Allan created a place that was always welcoming and fun for family and friends. The summers were a whirl of parties, water sports, picnics and amazing memories for all. A legacy that continues to this day, Stoney Lake remains the cornerstone for the family where so many shared adventures take place.
Donna was always ready for what life threw at her, whether dinner for 10 with only a few hours notice, or helping a friend in need of rescue. She tackled every challenge with gusto.
Donna, together with Allan, created a home for their three children that was warm and welcoming and filled with laughter and love. Donna is survived by son Mark (Mari) and her daughters Stacey (Anthony) and Alyson, as well as six grandchildren; Anders, Mats, Tomas, Katie, Peirce and Charlie.
