It is with heavy hearts the family of Jean Leslie Edgerton announce her passing on July 24th , 2021 after a
lengthy illness at the Ottawa Hospital. Beloved wife of Dwayne, and adored mother of Sara-Lyn, Michael
and Jeffrey. Born on November 19 th , 1947, in Ottawa, Jean was the devoted daughter of Wilfred and
Elsie (nee Ludlam) Ritz and loyal sister of Allan, Linda, Terri (Jack), Janis (Darcy), Steven, and John
(Danielle). Jean will be lovingly remembered by nieces and nephews, Heather, James, Renee, and Ella,
grand-puppy Finnegan, as well as extended family, and great friends, including those from the Bank of
Nova Scotia where she worked for more than 40 years.
Following Jean’s retirement, she and Dwayne set out on multiple road trips to explore Canada and the
United States. Later in life, Jean overcame her fear of flying and delighted in trips to Europe. With their
husbands in tow, Jean and her sisters visited places like the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Greece;
although, Ireland and Italy were her most memorable destinations.
Jean survived breast cancer, a tornado, a pandemic, and close to 50 years of marriage. Jean’s sense of
humour was only surpassed by her giant heart. She was a kind soul whose friends were always welcome
for a hot meal. Ever the consummate host, Jean loved planning and preparing for her annual summer
party where friends and family would reunite to celebrate each other.
Jean was also an excellent seamstress, sewing everything from her sisters’ bridesmaid dresses, to quilts
for family and friends. Even in the quarantined months leading up to her hospitalization, Jean began
several smaller quilts intended for newborns at CHEO; quilts which will lovingly be completed to honour
her legacy.
Due to current health restrictions, a celebration of life event will be held at a later date. Details will
follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shepherds of Good Hope or the Ottawa Food Bank.
