Muriel was the only child of Terry and Doris Barton. In 1951 she married Roy Davison and enjoyed nearly 63 years of marriage. Muriel was the proud and loving mother of Jenny (Michael), Terry (Margie) and Laura, grandmother of Andrew (Michelle), Sarah (Ryan), Joey, Chloe, Emma and Erin and great-grandmother to Nicole. She lived independently and on her own terms until succumbing after a short battle with cancer that she bore with dignity and strength.
Born on Condor Avenue in Toronto, when Muriel was a girl the family moved across the Danforth to Frankdale Avenue and she was proud to have grown up in East York. She attended R.H.McGregor PS and East York CI and eventually the University of Toronto. Muriel had a lifelong love of music and the performing arts. A talented musician, she could sing and play both the piano and the violin performing with amateur groups in Toronto and later in Oakville. She was also a talented actress who was a part of the active amateur theatre world of late 1940’s Toronto. It was in this world that Muriel met Roy. Marriage and the arrival of Jenny and Terry were followed by a 3 year move to California. Returning to Canada in 1959, the family settled in Don Mills and the family grew with the addition of Laura. In the 1960’s Muriel wrote, directed and even played in many of the Christmas concerts at Mallow Road PS. Don Mills was home until 1992 when Muriel and Roy moved to Oakville. The move to Oakville opened a new chapter with a new musical group, time at Sir John Colborne Senior Citizen Centre and playing bridge with friends.
Family was always important and Sunday dinners with roast beef were a feature. As an only child her immediate family was small but she treasured her relationships with her cousins in Canada and the UK, their children and her nephews and nieces on the Davison side. Muriel always had a strong sense of social responsibility and maintained the slightly socialist beliefs of her parents. She was both socially progressive and fiscally conservative. Always interested in helping others, she volunteered with the Salvation Army, the Home and School Association, an adult literacy programme and managed the YWCA international boutique in North Toronto for years. As a girl she roamed the nearby fields and the Don Valley with her father and acquired a substantial knowledge of birds and plants. However, she preferred to enjoy the outdoors through a window. Jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and sudokus were dearly enjoyed pastimes that were arranged around the schedule of Coronation Street. Muriel is greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
