Obituary of Walter Vanderkooy
Walter passed away quietly in Lakeridge Health Hospital Oshawa, Ontario on Saturday, June 19, 2021 in his 95th year. Walter leaves behind his wife of 70 years Samulina “Lina” and their children, Margaret (Imtiaz) Ahmed, Anne (Andre) Cornellier, Sharon (Ron) Scott and Arnold Vanderkooy (Margaret). He is predeceased by his daughter Nel Dafoe (Keith surviving) and his son Walter Vanderkooy (Peggy surviving). He also leaves behind his grandchildren: Racquel, Michael, Sonja, Alexander, Sharon, Alison, Paul, Jennifer, Diana, Melanie and Walter Jr. and great grandchildren: Tristan, Kayla, Dalton, Jesse, Melody, Jack, Nicholas, Helena, Calvin, Audrey, Daniel, and Callie. He is also survived by his brothers, Teun (Francis) and Bertus (Aria) both of Holland. Walter is predeceased by his sisters, Sjaan, Toos and Annie, and his brothers, George, Klaas (Jani surviving) and Piet.
Walter was born in Rotterdam, Nederland and immigrated to Canada in 1953 along with his wife Samulina and their eldest two children Margaret and Nellie. Walter had an immense love of music and sang in the church choir for many years. His voice will now be heard in heaven and will be carried within us until we meet again.
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 25, 2021 from 10:30 to 11:30 at the Steele Funeral Home, Moira Street Chapel, 30 Moira Street, Belleville. Attendance is limited due to current restrictions. Those wishing to attend must preregister by emailing rsvp@steelefuneralhome.ca or by calling 613-968-2273 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. A private family service will be held later in the day with Interment at Zion Hill Cemetery, Thurlow Township. If desired, Memorial Donations to the Alzheimer Society would be appreciated by the family.
