Hanson, Waltraut Martha (Jenny)
Our dear mom passed away peacefully surrounded with love at Innisfree House Hospice on May 20, 2021 at the age of 83. Dearly loved mother of Monica Hanson-Clappison (Carl), Michael Hanson, John Hanson (Kerry) and Sonya Jones (Mark). Cherished Omi to Jennifer Turner-Garrett (Kelly), Marissa Turner (Paul), Michael Turner, Malanya Hanson (Evan), Zak Hanson, Leo Hanson, Josh Jones (Tana) and Natasha Jones (Casey). An endearing Great-Omi to Samantha, Jacob, Alexis, with a new baby joining our family in September, Matilda, Mason, Bobbi, and Harlie. Also survived by her family in Germany, brother Harald Bartles (the late Karin) and beloved aunt to Marion (Jorge), Michael and great-nephew Dominik.
Our mom was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1938. Her family endured many hardships during the war. In later years she enjoyed participating in many school plays and loved music and soccer. As a young mom, our family immigrated to Canada in 1960. With 4 children she moved over 20 times, all over the world, before settling in Kitchener, Ontario. Here she became a member of the Transylvania Club where she made many friends and memories singing in the choir, participating in activities and travelling.
Our mom loved her work with Birks and Mappins Jewellers over the years. She enjoyed helping her customers select the perfect pieces and she prided herself on remembering names and faces.
Over the years our family expanded and she became fondly known as Omi to 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren (with a new baby due in September 2021). In recent years she was a resident of Briarfield Gardens in Kitchener. She enjoyed her time here and made many new friends with the fellow residents and staff.
Throughout her life she kept her German heritage alive in her cooking, her traditions and her stories of the “old country”. She taught us all the value of traditions, being polite and respectful, she always gave you her undivided attention and she expected the same in return.
She loved being outside, gardening and watching birds and butterflies. She enjoyed crocheting and we will all miss our yearly supply of dish clothes she would send at Christmas.
She enjoyed the British monarchy and getting all the latest stories and gossip from her weekly magazines. Her great-grandson, Jacob, once told her that she looked like the lady on the back of the twenty-dollar bill (The Queen) and she thought this was the most wonderful compliment.
Our mom, above anything else, enjoyed connecting and being with family. A phone call or email, a family meal, playing a game of cards, singing and dancing (including the chicken-dance). We all have great memories of impromptu kitchen parties where we dance and sing at the top of our lungs…even if it is the wrong words.
We will cherish all our memories and carry Mom/Omi in our hearts forever.
Goodnight, sleep tight Snow White.
Private cremation has taken place under the direction of the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Interment will be at Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener, to be scheduled at a later date.
