Jonathan Scott Ryan
April 13, 1969-May 19, 2021
Age 52
Jonathan was not only a son, a brother, and a friend; he was a
warrior; a warrior inside his mind, everyday, with thoughts of doubt
and anxiety. Yet, everyday, Jonathan put one foot in front of the
other, plodded and pushed through, until he could be a warrior no more
and laid down his sword for the last time.
With a gentle and kind soul Jonathan approached everything and
everyone with respect and reverence. He had profound love of nature
and animals, especially cats. He loved to fish. He had a strong
practice and dedication to martial arts. He would spend many hours
reading; reading to build strength and find purpose. Despite his
struggles, Jonathan always had words of encouragement and wisdom to
impart to others. He was truly selfless.
Jonathan Graduated from Gonzaga High School and went to Memorial
University obtaining a degree in Arts (Sociology). In his younger
years he travelled Europe with his close friends, who to this day, I
know all have fond memories of their experience. Jonathan had a
beautiful singing voice. Occasionally he would break into song at
Karaoke at his favorite gathering spot to the delight of many.
While Jonathan’s family lived away, he gathered much support and
strength from the wonderful people at the Murphy Center in St.
John’s. We would like to thank you for filling in the gaps and
being there for Jonathan to help guide him along the way. The team at
Stella’s Circle and the Hungry Heart Café played an
important role in Jonathan’s life also. Words cannot express how
grateful we are for helping to fill Jonathan’s days with purpose
and hope. There are also those who were in Jonathan’s trusted
circle of friends that we would like to thank for being there. Without
acknowledging each of you, please know that the fact that you checked
in on Jonathan, offered companionship, offered a ride, shared a meal,
any thing you did, no matter how small, is truly appreciated and for
that we will be ever thankful.
Jonathan is survived by his father John Ryan (wife, Sandra Hillyer)
living in New Brunswick, sister Gail Okoh (Michel), niece Olivia
Coates (Drew), nephew Zachary Okoh, living in Nova Scotia. Jonathan is
also survived by his beloved cat, Zenna who brought him so much
comfort in trying times. Thanks to some wonderful people living in the
same building as Jonathan did, Zenna has a new home. Jonathan is
predeceased by his mother Lois Ryan (Driscoll). Jonathan, you are back
in the loving arms of Mom now. Embrace her love and heart and warmth
again where you are safe and can forget your worries.
Special thank you to Barrett’s funeral home for helping us from
afar. When travel restrictions ease, we will come home to have a
celebration of his life and place him to rest at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery
with his mother and grandparents.
Donations in made to DunRoamin Stray and Rescue in Jonathan’s memory
would be appreciated.
