On June 1, 1993, Stan retired from Algoma Steel’s SecurityDepartment however retirement was short-lived, when he returned to theworkforce as a Manager of Safety on a variety of construction projects in SaultSte. Marie and the surrounding area. He always managed to keep himself busy, whether it was lending a helping hand to family members, friends and neighbourson construction projects or volunteering. He was a proud board member ofthe Ken Brown Recovery home for more than 38 years. On two occasions, hewas recipient of the “Volunteer of the Year Award” for his dedication andcommitment to this organization. He also was a member of WillowgroveUnited Church’s Worship, Finance, Property and Ministry and PersonnelCommittees.
Stan was born on Cockburn Island and for many years, he wouldreturn to Cockburn for the annual deer hunt with his buddies, Ron Forbes, and thelate Bob Black, Jim McIntyre and Bob Wansborough. I am sure there werelots of stories told over the occasional rum and coke. He also enjoyedboating and fishing trips to Quinn Lake and St. Joe Island.

TheDash
I read of a man who stood to speak at thefuneral of a friend. He referred to the dates on the tombstonefrom the beginning…to the end.
He noted that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date withtears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between thoseyears.
For that dash represents all the time that they spent alive on earth. And nowonly those who knew and loved him know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash. Whatmatters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.
So, think about this long and hard. Are there things you’d like tochange? For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real and alwaystry to understand the way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more and love the people inour lives like we’ve never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile, remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.
So, when your eulogy is being read, with your life’s actions to rehash…would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent YOUR dash?
