Elli Pape (Penno) was born on December 23, 1932 in Kulligen, Poland. Her father Emil, who was a Pastor, and mother Martha had 4 children: Jean, Elli, Fred, and Walter. Elli was baptized at a young age and followed her Lord and Saviour the rest of her life. Following WWII, the family was disrupted, because her father and mother were taken to Russia, and only her mother returned 4 years later. In the meantime, the children were left to fend for themselves. In 1950, an Uncle in Edmonton sponsored all the children and her mother to come to Canada. In 1956, Elli met her future husband Bert, and they married on November 9, 1957. They had 2 children, Carrie Gail and Barbara Jean. Elli worked as a fur finisher at several Edmonton furriers. Elli enjoyed singing in the choir at Central Baptist Church, baking, reading, gardening, and taking care of her family. Elli and Bert enjoyed travelling, and it was after a trip to Expo 67 in Montreal that she began to display symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. After being officially diagnosed with MS, she went into remission and was able to make several trips to Hawaii, Europe, Brazil as well as 22 years during the winter in Phoenix. In Elli’s later years, she was challenged by the mobility issues and fatigue associated with MS. She was able to remain in her home with Bert until March 2019, when after a hospital stay and diagnosis that required professional care, she was moved into Millwoods Shepherd’s Care for the next two years. After a recent short stay in the hospital, she passed away peacefully on May 11, 2021.
