Obituary
In loving memory of our dad Wladyslaw (Walter) Kozlowski who passed away peacefully at the age of 99 years old on December 11, 2020 just short of his 100th birthday on January 2, 2021.
Walter will forever be remembered by his children Teresa (Mike) Barrie, Roman (Lilianne) Sudbury, Marian (Linda) Hornepayne and Helen, Sudbury. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Rikki, Cory, Alexandra, Vanessa, Jurney, Briggs, Kwest and Skyler. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Maria, his son Peter and his siblings Bronislaw, Tadeusz, Kazimierz, Jan, Mieczyslaw, Helena, Janina, Stefania, Bronislawa, Stanislawa, Joanna and Lechoslaw.
Walter was born in Polwiosek Stary, Poland. As a young man, during world War II, he was taken from his family where he endured the horrors of multiple concentration camps including Dachau, Mauthausen and Gusen. When World War II ended, he remained in Germany and worked for the Polish Civil Guard Unit in the US army where he was a guard during the Nuremberg Trials. He then moved to Frankfurt where he worked at an airport unloading cargo from planes.
An opportunity arose to move and he immigrated to Canada for a better life. On his travels, he joined other immigrants who were moving to Hornepayne for work and ended up being employed by Olav Haavaldsrud Timber Company. He then went on to work for the Canadian National Railway in various jobs such as engine watchman, iceman, janitor and finally as a foreman for Bridges and Buildings. He retired in 1985 after working for 33 years.
After retirement, Walter and Maria moved to Sault Ste. Marie where they developed several friendships, enjoyed many social events and became part of the Polish community.
Walter’s many interests included fishing, gardening, dancing but, what he was most passionate about was carpentry. He took pride in using simple tools to create, build and repair many things for both himself and others. He missed this the most after he lost his vision.
In his later years, he returned to Hornepayne with Maria to live in the Long Term Care Unit where they remained until their passing. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr Cameron and all the staff of the Hornepayne Community Hospital. We are truly grateful for all wonderful care and compassion you provided our parents over the years.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private funeral ceremony will be held at Holy Name of Jesus Church with interment to follow at the Hornepayne Cemetery. Masks will be mandatory.
As a token of sympathy, memorial donations to the Hornepayne Community Hospital Long Term Care Unit would be appreciated.

Our dad lived life to the fullest and never took anything for granted. He cherished his family and friends. He often said “I have lived a good life”. Dad you taught us how to live a “good life”. You can now rest in peace as your job is done here on earth. We will miss you and always love you! Give Mom a hug for us!
