Obituary for
Vincent Robert Shearer
Shearer, Vincent Robert – Age 67, Bible Hill. We are deeply saddened to announce that following a stroke at his Bible Hill home on Thursday, Vince passed away peacefully in the Halifax Infirmary on Sunday, August 30, 2020. Born in Truro in 1953, he was a son of Maxine and the late Charlie Shearer. Vince grew up in Hilden and spent his early years working at various jobs, finishing his career with FedEx.
Vince was a fifteen year cancer survivor. We are still debating if it was the Shearer or Hingley stubbornness that helped him win that battle! These health issues forced him to take early retirement. No longer in the workforce, Vince began his new « career » as a volunteer.
He became a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26 and the Royal Canadian Air Force – Wing 102. As a volunteer, he peeled countless pounds of potatoes and vegetables, cooked fish and chips, donated his time selling poppies for the annual campaign, and was a flag bearer at many Remembrance Day parades and the Battle of the Atlantic services. His efforts did not go unnoticed and he received numerous annual volunteer recognition awards from both the Wing and Legion. His most treasured award was the 2016 Legion Volunteer Award recognized by Her Majesty, the Queen on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Vince also drove many family members and friends to Halifax for medical appointments and treatments.
Some of Vince’s happiest times were spent in the great outdoors, hunting, fishing and 4-wheeling. He was fortunate to experience moose hunting in Newfoundland and Cape Breton, fishing many local lakes and even fishing in New Zealand. He always looked forward to the annual smelt run in Portapique so he would have plenty to share with family and friends.
Although Vince frequently commented that his memory wasn’t the best, he somehow never forgot a birthday. Many of us were recipients of his annual phone call, e-mail or Facebook message to celebrate our special day. We’ll also not forget the daily jokes he forwarded. We loved that fact that Vince was not particularly « politically correct »!
During their 39 year marriage, Vince and Marion spent several years travelling south on winter vacations and together they planned, cooked and hosted many special occasions for family and friends. They were absolutely the best! Even if you were having a bad day, a visit to their home always brought a smile to your face and you always left for home with Vince saying, « Thanks so much for dropping by ». His keen sense of humour and those crazy Shearer « sayings » will be missed; however, we are very fortunate that Robert appears to have inherited his father’s sense of humour.
Vince enjoyed NASCAR races, playing pool, the many, many marathon card games on Saturday nights and his long standing relationship with the « Captain ».
Vince was predeceased by his father, Charlie. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Marion (Henderson); his son, Robert; his mother, Maxine; brothers, Steve (Connie) and Charles “Tyke”; sisters, Aileen (Terry) Flewelling, Lynn (Greg McFadden) and Roberta “Bert”; in-laws, Danny and Margo Henderson; brothers-in-law, Jimmy (Gloria), David (Angela), Doug and Dana; sisters-in-law, Tammy (Foster) and Gina (John); aunts, uncles, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and cousins.
Sincere thanks are extended to the ambulance attendants, emergency room staff of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre and the doctors and nursing staff of the Halifax Infirmary.
As an organ donor, there are now several recipients of his precious gifts. Vince requested his body be donated to Dalhousie University for Medical Research. Respecting his wishes, no visitation or funeral service will be held; however, a gathering of family and friends will be held at a later date to celebrate his life, reminisce and share « Vince » stories.
Donations to the Colchester East Hants Health Centre Foundation or the QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.ColchesterCommunity.com
