Obituary

With sorrow and deep gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of our dear Mom, grandma/Baba, great grandma/Pra Baba, great great grandma, Valentina Hritzuk on Thursday, November 5, 2020. She passed away peacefully at Turtleford Hospital at the age of 97.
Val leaves to carry on her memory: her children, Sophie (Rudolf Berner), John (Prudence), Eugene (Cathy), and Dan (Linda); 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; one great great grandson; her sister, Vera (Herb) Wourms; her sisters-in-law, Elfreda, and Mae; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by: her husband, John; her siblings, Sergy, Sonia, and George; her brothers-in-law, Walter Podiluk, and Fred Hritzuk; and her sisters-in-law, Vera Zeller, Olga Trotzuk, and Mary Sevenko.
Mom was born on June 13, 1923 in Dmytrovka, Poland, and emigrated with her family to Canada, arriving in St. Walburg in July, 1928. She married John Hritzuk in 1941 and started farming in the Glenbogie District. In the 1970’s they moved into the town of St. Walburg and left the farm in the hands of their youngest son, Dan. Along with farming came a strong belief in supporting the community. Mom was involved in many projects including the St. Walburg Hospital, Lakeland Lodge and Nursing Home, as well as serving as Trustee for Turtleford School Division for 17 years. For many years Mom was a member of the O.O.R.P., a hard-working and dedicated group supporting the building and care of the Elks Hall and other community facilities. She loved her community and was content to spend her life being an active part of it.
Our mom was immensely proud of all her children and next to that, her beautiful begonias; she was known as the Begonia Lady, far and wide. She loved her church and was the driving force in the local Russo-Greek Orthodox church; hosting and accommodating priests who came to give services from time to time. Receiving her Final Blessing by Father Ryan was the ultimate gift to her. « The Golden Rule » (where doing unto others as you would have them do unto you), was the principle she lived by. Mom moved into Lakeland Manor in 2015. She loved playing cards, watching curling (from her easy chair in her final years), especially if her son, Eugene, was participating, and watching CFL games, if her grandson, Tim, was officiating. She was an excellent cook and homemaker, and was more than happy to share her baking with everyone. The love and daily care she received from her family and those around her made her life complete.
The family would like to especially thank Debbie from Home Care, and those who helped and supported Mom these past five years.
« To live in hearts left behind is not to die »
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date pending health regulations.
Donations in memory of Val may be made to the Russo-Greek Cemetery Fund, or to the St. Walburg Royal Purple.
