Sampson, Ambrose “Tremaine” (Sammy)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ambrose “Tremaine” Sampson at the Palliative Care Unit of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on August 11, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. Born in Florence, August 21, 1940, he was the son of the late Joseph “Ambrose” and Mary (Rasmussen) Sampson. Tremaine was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, family member and an active member of his community. Tremaine joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1957, where he served as an Air Frame Technician at CFB Uplands, CFB Cold Lake and CFB Shearwater. Upon his retirement in 1980, he returned to his native home Florence, Cape Breton where he worked as a commercial scallop fisherman for many years and enjoyed the craft of woodworking as his favorite pastime. Tremaine was an active member of Branch 083 Florence Legion for over 55 years, where he served as Past President for four years, was awarded the MSM and Palm Leaf, and proudly served as a Service Officer of BR83 for over 30 years. Tremaine was uniquely dedicated to supporting Veterans and their families and was a recipient of the Minister of Veterans Affairs Commendation, which is awarded for contributions in an exemplary manner for the care and well-being of Veterans.Tremaine was also a life member of the CSA, member of the Cape Breton Naval Veterans Association, and an executive member of the Cape Breton Comfort Fund.Tremaine is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 59 years, Renova (MacPherson), his adoring daughters Trudy (Robert) Trenholm (Austin, TX) and Tammy (Fred) Young (Eastern Passage, NS), grandchildren Samantha (Karl) Hebert, Sean Trenholm and Sydney (Alex) Halepaska, great granddaughter Evelyn Ambrose Hebert, sisters Iris Sampson, Sylvia Whalen and Sonya (Doug) MacAskill, and many cherished extended family, and his two coffee buddies, Frankie and Ernie.Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Nanda MacNeil and brother Colin Sampson. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to J.M. Jobes Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be Monday, August 17, 2020, at 10 am at Holy Family Catholic Church, Sydney Mines, with a reception to follow at Branch 083 Legion, Florence (numbers may be limited due to Covid-19 restrictions).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County, the Victoria Order of Nurses (VON), or at a charity of your choice. Tremaine’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of VON, Holly Winn and the entire CBRH Palliative Care Team for their remarkable care and kindness.
