1929 ~ 2020
Steve passed away at Pinawa Hospital on November 18th after a brief illness. He is predeceased by his wife, Irene; daughter, Maureen; brothers and sisters and his parents Alex and Anna. He is survived by his daughter Pat; son-in-law Tim; grandchildren Ashley (David) and Bradley (Cassandra); great granddaughters Leah and Emma; brother John and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve was the second youngest of ten children born on the family farm in Cromwell, right at the beginning of the Great Depression. He farmed most of his life, his bachelor years ending when he married Irene. They sold the farm and he began work at AECL until he retired in 1993.
Steve’s farm upbringing instilled a strength and hard working attitude that lasted his lifetime. He treated his grandchildren and great grandchildren like gold and it took very little convincing to get Grandpa to do whatever you asked him to. He was a quiet man who once in a while came out with a witty remark to make you realize he’d been listening all along. He had Grandpa-isms like calling pepsi “pipsi” and saying “hallo” instead of hello. Steve’s “one day at a time and wait and see” attitude and his ability to just be present in the moment were life lessons in a world that moves at too busy of a pace. He always said, “everybody just needs to slow down”.
Thank you to Drs. Hastir and Bruneau, staff at St. Boniface and Pinawa hospitals, Stony Plains and all of Steve’s Home Care Attendants for their compassionate care. Our rock that grounded us is no longer here, but we will carry with us your quiet, gentle spirit forever.
As per Steve’s wishes cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.
