Obituary
Stanislaus Joseph Mackey, born February 24, 1931, died suddenly on February 18, 2020 of complications related to an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.
Stan was predeceased by his parents Ellen and Patrick, brothers Pat, Aiden and Dermot, his wife of 66 years Annette , and way too soon, his beautiful daughter Patty and husband Gary.
Sad and grieving are his sons John (Lyn), Tom (Maude) and Michael. Also missing their Gumpy/Poppa are Ashley (Mike), Josh (Yui) and Caiti. Little great-grand daughter Scarlett will never know her ‘Gumpy’. Stan’s special friend Charlotte is also mourning his loss as is his extended family in Nfld, especially his bother Raymond.
Stan left his hometown of Cape Broyle, NFLD to join the RCMP in 1952 and met Annette in Saskatchewan soon after. He left the force to join the Canadian Pacific Police Department and was a dedicated, loyal employee who moved up the ranks and retired as a Regional Inspector after 36 years. Stan had lived across the country with his family but retired to Nanaimo in 1988.
Stan was a very social man and put a lot of heart and soul into whatever endeavors he took on. He was a member of the Rotary Club, achieving the status of President. Until his passing, he was also a member of the Probus Club. Additionally, Stan had volunteered for many a charity over the years and especially enjoyed volunteering at the Nanaimo Military Museum. He could be counted on to open the doors of the museum every Saturday morning and greet visitors with a smile and a heartfelt handshake.
Stan’s other interests included gardening, fishing, curling, golfing and travel. He was also active with the Trinity Catholic Church on Sundays and was a lay minister at his retirement community (Berwick on the Lake) on Wednesday mornings.
He will be dearly missed by family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
