Roger’s Obituary
Roger Howard William DeChamp
Roger was born in Shelburne June 19 1925, the son of the late Clifford and Mabel (Acker) DeChamp. A premature baby, he was not expected to live. He left school after grade 10 to work in a fish plant to help out his family. At 15 he crewed on a swordfishing schooner. He then learned his machinist trade making large naval guns for the war effort. At the age of 17 he joined the RCAF and served in England as a reargunner (408 Goose Squadron) on Halifax Bombers for the rest of the war. He returned to Canada on his 20th birthday. He became Harbourmaster in Shelburne, set up his own marine machine shop and later re-enlisted in the Air Force. For over 20 years the family was stationed on many bases. Then returned to Shelburne where Roger taught his trade at the Shelburne Vocational School (NSCC).
Roger enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and playing cards, especially crib. He was an avid reader and obtained a teaching degree later in life. He enjoyed golfing and bowling until the age of 94. Active in his community, he was a past master of Albert Masonic Lodge #30 having been a member for over 70 years, a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, served on Town Council and was a warden and faithful member of Christ Anglican Church. He was a friend to many. Roger was able to stay in his own home with the help of his daughters until January this year when he moved to Veteran’s Place, Yarmouth. There he was lovingly cared for by the wonderful staff. He was very happy there.
Roger was predeceased by the love of his life wife Olive (1985), companion Katherine (2011), daughter Anne (2020), sisters Alida Young and Amy Kavanagh. He is survived by daughters Ruth (John) Waters and Grace (Francis) Campbell and step daughter Lois (Leslie) Smith. He adored his grand children Jessica, Jamie (Dian), Laura, and Michael and step grandson Jon (Maria). He will be missed by good friend Carol.
Roger supported many charities but his favourite was Shelburne Loyalist Food Bank. Donations may be made to them. Visitation will be Thursday August 20 6 to 8 pm, funeral service at 2 pm Friday August 21, both at Huskilsons Funeral Home in Shelburne. Officiated by Rev. Ed Trevors. Covid distancing and masks please. On-line condolences may be left for the family at www.huskilson.net
