Obituary
It is with mixed emotions that the family of Robert Laurence Mutlow announce his passing on March 26, 2020 in the town that was his home, Rosetown.
Dad was born on the family farm in the McGee District on January 30, 1924 and received his education at Belvoir School. He was proud to say that he was at the top of his class (only student)! At the age of 17, he felt his calling to join the army. After contracting Rheumatic Fever, he never served overseas but had the privilege of instructing new recruits. After the war, he worked at the Saskatoon Stockyards, drove a taxi and ran a garage. It was during this time working in Saskatoon he met his future wife, Cynthia Little, at one of the many dances they both attended. They were married on October 17, 1945. It’s hard to talk about dad alone without mom being part of it. They shared 67 years of wonderful marriage. They resided in Saskatoon until 1948 when the opportunity arose for them to start their mixed family farm in the McGee district. They had five children: Darlene (1948), Ray (1950), Linda (1952), Kenneth (1956) and Donna (1962). They were involved in many activities in the McGee and Fiske Communities including curling and ball (Dad was an umpire for many years – even calling out his own son on occasion!). They loved to dance and often, evenings out with friends ended at the farm with more fun – nobody ever went home hungry.
In later years, dad took up golf and he golfed regularly at the Rosetown Golf Club. In 1979, mom and dad bought a house in Rosetown, continuing to farm until Ray took over in 1989. They helped out when needed for many years and became more involved in the Rosetown community. Dad delivered Meals on Wheels for the Legion and also drove folks to appointments in the Handivan – he was a true volunteer. He was a proud Veteran and member of the Legion and served in almost every capacity in the organization. Every Remembrance Day service was attended until the last two years when he chose to watch it on TV. His macular degeneration did stop some of his activities, but he still played cards and watched sports on TV. He knew all the curling and baseball stats and also followed the golf tours. He listened to books on CD’s from CNIB, especially enjoying the historic ones about the war and farming – and westerns! He was one of the senators on coffee row at the Co-op and loved meeting up with his friends there. After mom’s passing, dad lived on his own until moving to Orange Memories in December 2019.
Laurence is survived by his children Darlene (Richard) Epp, Ray (Pat) Mutlow, Linda (Harvey Swiscoski), Ken (Janet) Mutlow and Donna (Larry) Donald as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Marion (Edwin) Belag, sister Elda Hewitt and brother-in-law Harry (Marlene) Little. Dad was predeceased by his loving wife and life partner Cynthia on January 12, 2013, his mother Evelyn Taminga and step-dad John, his dad Roger Mutlow. His mother and father-in-law William and Jesse Little, brother Albert (Kathy), sister Lorraine (Arthur) Horton, sister-in-law Evelyn (Leonard) Black, brothers-in-law Stan Dahl and Lloyd Hewitt, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. at the Rosetown Cemetery with Reverend Bob Mutlow officiating. Please bring a lawn chair, wear a mask and practice social distancing.
The family would like to thank the Orange Memories staff for the compassionate care they provided and the Rosetown and District Health Centre for his care in his last days. Memorial donations may be made to the CNIB, 1149 8th Street East, Saskatoon, SK S7H 0S3 or to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301 2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK S4P 3X1.
