The Rev. Dr. M. Allan McDowell, loving husband of Ann Mary, father of Mary Ann (Doug), Mark (Reina) and Matthew (predeceased), and Grampy to Cody, Kyle, Katie, Conor, Chloe, Benjamin and Anna. Also survived by a great granddaughter Lily as well as two sisters Dora McCaig and Susie Karen McGimpsey (Ed), died on Sunday, June 7th, 2020 entering into that place prepared for him in the Father’s house, as Ann sat by his side.
Allan was born in Toronto, on April 11, 1939. When his father died Allan was 16, he was able to maintain his studies, and supported his mother and sisters with whom he remained close throughout his life. He was predeceased by sisters Dorothy, Marjorie and Shirley.
In 1965, Allan and Ann met, found that they loved each other deeply, and committed themselves to each other in marriage in 1966. Not only did this union grow into a larger family, their partnership extended into the ministry they shared with the many congregations that Allan was called to serve as a minister in The United Church of Canada. They served in Joyceville Penitentiary, Kincardine, Mt. Forest, St. Paul’s Thunder Bay, Chatham, Wheatley, Christ United Church, Lyn, North Augusta Pastoral Charge and Brockville General Hospital Chaplin.
While each had their own areas of expertise, together they were able to help many individuals and communities of faith grow in their decipleship in ways they would not have been able to alone.
Allan was ordained to his ministry on June 4th, 1965. During the course of that ministry, deeply embedded in the traditions of the faith, he pushed congregations to explore how to best live it out. From his studies in using television as a tool for teaching and evangelism, to development of congregational outreach ministries, to his both theologically sound and grounded-in-everyday-life sermons, Allan is remembered by not only The United Church of Canada, but the wider, ecumenical communion. These leave a rich legacy.
Of the many of Jesus’ disciples who have gone on before us, Allan is one who we can truly join in saying, » well done, good and faithful servant. Enter now into the rest of your Lord ». His presence in our lives will be deeply missed.
Due to Covid-19, a private service will be held at The Irvine Funeral and Chapel, 4 James Street East, Brockville with interment to follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Maitland.
