Rev. Canon C. Russell’s Obituary
Rev. Canon C. Russell Elliott dies at 103
C. Russell Elliott died peacefully on October 2, 2020.
Born in New Ross on July 10, 1917, he was the son of Anson and Glenna (Russell) Elliott, and the sixth of nine children. The modest means and sense of community within New Ross gave Russell a sense of rootedness and deep appreciation for community. He was called to ordination in the Anglican Church of Canada after attending the University of King’s College in Halifax. He and his wife Dorothy (Tonks) married in 1940. They had four children, Michael (Evelyn), Mary Ellen (Leslie), Charles (Wendy), and Martha. He served in five Nova Scotia parishes (Pugwash, Bridgetown, Lantz, Fairview and Liverpool) while living his strong commitment to social justice. He was awarded honorary doctorates from the University of King’s College and the Atlantic School of Theology. Retiring to Wolfville in 1982, he was active in parish ministry, community organizations, while writing four books. After his first wife’s death, Russell married Carol Armstrong and became the step-father of Paul, Lesley (John), Peter (Nancy). He continued to be active in Anglican ministry for over 90 years. Russell was predeceased by siblings: Robert (Sara), Evelyn (Mike Bosser), Hattie (William James), Chester (Alice), Lewis (Ellamae), Howard (Frances), Madelyn (Leonard Cooley), Albert (Florence), son Michael and daughter Martha; and both his wives. Unfortunately the funeral will be by invitation only due to Covid restrictions. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Michael Elliott Fund, King’s College, St. John’s Church, the V.O.N., or a charity of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mundle’s Funeral Home, Pugwash. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting the funeral home website at www.mmcfunerals.com
