It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Pritam Kaur Johal (Bibi), on Monday August 24, 2020. Bibi passed away peacefully in her sleep while at home with her loved ones. She is predeceased by her husband, Gurdial (1988) and her children Surjeet (1985) and Surinder (2009). Bibi is survived by her children; Surjeet (Gurnek), Gurdev (Balwinder), Harjinder (Jaswinder), Rani (Mohan), Balbir (Bhupinder), Kulwant (Jaswinder), Raguwinder (Satinder), Kamaljit (Jagtar) and her son-in-law Baldev Randhawa. Bibi leaves behind 24 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by many relatives and friends all over Canada, India and the United Kingdom.
Bibi was born in the small village of Theleta, Punjab to the late Lakka Singh and Nammi Kaur Sahota. After marriage, she moved to her husband’s village of Jandiala and then later immigrated to Canada with her family in 1982.
Bibi was a small lady with a very large presence. Having come from humble beginnings, Bibi did not have the opportunity to go to school, yet she was smarter than most. A natural born leader, Bibi could take charge in every situation and do it with ease. Bibi commanded respect and it was not uncommon for her to greet you by yelling at you. But that is how you knew you were loved.
Bibi was the matriarch of our family and instilled in all of us a great many qualities. Among the greatest was her devotion to her loved ones. She worked tirelessly to care for her family. Whether it was babysitting her grandchildren, cooking meals, or just making you a cup of tea when you really needed it, Bibi was always there for her family. She was known for her strong work ethic. Never one to sit idle, Bibi demanded the same from everyone around her. If she happened to find you sitting down, you would no doubt hear, “What are you doing? Get up! Do something!”
Bibi leaves behind an incredible legacy that spans 5 generations. Her loss will be felt deeply but we celebrate her long, happy life and all the memories we have with her.
The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Bibi’s caregivers (Peninah and Elena) for their extraordinary care and support during her last few months. We are forever grateful.
