JOHNSTON, Peter Henry
September 7, 1938 – March 9, 2020
Started his new beginning at the age of 81 surrounded by his loving family, while at St Joseph’s General Hospital in Elliot Lake.
Beloved wife of Mildred (nee Commanda) for 63 wonderful years. Cherished father of Elaine, Odette (Stig), Cheryl (pre-deceased) (Ernie), Kelly (Ross), Lesley (Jimmy), Petrina (pre-deceased) (Wesley), Melody (Jose), Holly (James), Tania (Greg), Buffy (Jeremi) and Christie. Grandfather to 30 and Great-grandfather to 21. Son of Henry Johnston and Verna (nee Nadjiwan) Johnston (both pre-deceased). Will be fondly remembered by many family members and friends in Serpent River First Nation, Chippewas of Nawash and along the North Shore.
Peter devoted his life to his family, the Church, his community and the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a Deacon and Administrator of Our Lady of the Highway Church for 43 years. Peter worked as a stationary engineer and was a Chief, Council Member and Band Manager of Serpent River First Nation and served the people along the North Shore. He was known for his words of wisdom, his ability to help those in need, his kind and forgiving manner, his “from the heart homilies” and his unique wood pile.
The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Joseph’s General Hospital and Health Sciences North as well as family and friends for their compassion and support during these difficult times.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Serpent River First Nation Lifestyles Centre, 36 Ball Park Road, Cutler, from Thursday, March 12, 2020 beginning at 5pm until time of funeral mass. Funeral mass to be held at Our Lady of the Highway Church on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 11am with interment at Serpent River First Nation Cemetery. Funeral wake will be held both Thursday and Friday beginning at 7pm. Father Gerry McDougall SJ officiating. Feast following funeral services.
