On September 9, 2020, Peter Alfred Pearson passed away in Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan. He was 89.
Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Anne Pearson (nee English) and his beloved grandson, Lance Edward Francoeur. He was a loving father to his two daughters, Julie Ann Francoeur and Cathey Jane Strom. Peter leaves behind one surviving grandchild, Rebecca Lynn Jabs, five great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. The son of Swedish immigrants, Peter also leaves behind many relatives in Sweden.
Until his retirement at the age of 68, Peter spent his working years doing a variety of jobs associated to BC’s forestry and marine industries. In 1946 he landed his first job as a construction labourer on the Bloedel, Stewart and Walsh Pulp Mill project in Port Alberni, BC. Peter’s last years of employment were spent performing shipwright duties at the Jones Marine Group.
Known to family and friends both young and old as “Pete,” he spent his last 15 years living in the Cowichan Bay floating community, where he helped his neighbours establish Bull Otter Park, a small sanctuary pf plants and flowers just past the shoreline. During his last years, Pete whiled away many hours trading stories in the adjoining Mermaid Lounge, an informal gathering place for members of the floating community at Pier 66 Marina.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the members of the Cowichan Bay Community for the kindness and compassion they showed to Pete during his years there.
Friend to all, enemy to no one, Pete had love in his heart for everyone. He will forever be remembered, loved and honoured by those who knew him.
A Celebration of Life to honour Pete will be held at a future date.
