With heavy hearts, we, the family of Pauline Mildred MacQueen, regret to announce her peaceful passing on Monday, October 12, 2020,at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born February 23, 1953, in Sydney, she was the daughter of the late Alexander “Alex” and Gloria (Burt) Ferguson.
Affectionately known as “Ma” by her children and grandchildren, and “Polly” by other friends and family, she lived a full and rich life. She married the love of her life, Richard, in 1974, and enjoyed a wonderful 46 years of marriage. Together they built a home, a family, and created a beautiful life. Ma was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend. Many would say she could be described as a ray of sunshine, and as sweet with a little bit of zest. She truly brought out the best in everyone. She often looked forward to pickling zucchini and beets when the garden would be ready each Fall, and hosting dinners on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthdays, and every special day in between. Polly was an incredible cook, and always loved to feed her visitors. Pies, cakes, puddings, muffins, squares, you name it, she could bake it. She enjoyed thrifting trips to Value Village with her granddaughters on the weekends, and was always able to find something stylish to add to her closet. Ma’s love for her grandchildren was infinite, and to say she simply spoiled them would be an understatement. Ma had many friendships, but one that she cherished dearly and always held close to her heart, was the one she had with Barb Fraser. Barb and our Ma were best friends since they were15 years old. Up until it’s closing, they could usually be found enjoying a meal at the old Jaspers Restaurant. Even after 52 years of friendship, they would still find the time to get together over a bite and enjoy each other’s company. Not many of us can say we’ve had a best friend for over half a century, but Ma and Barb were inseparable.
Ma was happiest spending time with her family, and is survived by her soulmate and husband of 46 years, Richard; daughters, Erin(Bill) Cameron, Sydney, and Audrey (Jason) Campbell, Sydney River; grandchildren, Hayleigh (Daniel) Cooper, Courtney (Brad) Price, James and Jenna; and brothers, Roy Ferguson, Sydney, David (Helen) Ferguson, Sydney, and Sandy (Wanda) Ferguson, Pt. Edward.
Ma left us with a lifetime of memories and lessons that will never be forgotten. How lucky were we to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. Until we meet again.
Due to Covid restrictions, a graveside service for family and friends will be held at Oakfield Cemetery on Monday, October 19 at 11 a.m., with Mr. Gary Grant officiating.
On her behalf, the family would like to express sincere appreciation for all the kindness of friends and neighbours, and would also like to extend an extra special thanks to the incredible staff at the Cape Breton Cancer Centre and the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital – memorial donations may be made here.
