Peacefully at home in her 91st year on June 18th, 2020. Parania spent the previous beautiful days tending to her garden under the canopy of fragrant blossoms from her apple tree and enjoying all the abundant vegetables, fruits and flowers growing round her. By her side till the end, her faithful little protector and companion, her dear Bichon Frise Bruni. Parania is lovingly remembered by her son Michael, daughter Mary (John Bartholomew), granddaughter Rachel Bartholomew, and cousin Hania Falat and family. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Dmytro and parents Theodore and Maria (nee Tkach) Kocan. Parania will be dearly missed by family, friends, neighbours and her community.
Born in Vyslik (Sanok district), Poland, her early life was marked by disruption, upheaval, hunger and survival. Throughout these difficult years Parania developed tremendous strength of character, a strong work ethic and resilience (qualities her husband and children much admired). Her earliest memories were learning that her father had left their home to help settle western Canada. His planned return was blocked first by the Great Depression and later the Second World War. During the war, young Parania found herself taking care of the family’s small farm including herding cattle, carrying wood and water in all types of weather and preparing meals to feed herself and her mother. When her school was bombed, Parania’s biggest regret was not being able to have a higher education. Consequently, she encouraged her children to pursue graduate and PhD level university degrees. When Vislik was destroyed in the late 1940’s, Parania and her mother were forcibly deported from their family home to Sozan (Staryi Sambir district), in what would become the (former) Soviet Union. There Parania lived with her mother on a collective farm (kolkhosp) until the 1960s when her father, now in Montreal, sponsored her and her mother to come to Canada. It was in Montreal that Parania met and married her beloved husband and life partner Dmytro. Together they had a beautiful home with a garden to call their own and a place where they would raise their family. Devout Ukrainian Catholics, they were both actively involved in their church and maintained strong ties with the Montreal Ukrainian diaspora. Throughout her life, Parania was known as an excellent cook and Paska (Easter bread) baker, generous hostess and wonderful homemaker. She learned to make ballet slippers and was able to contract work from home as her children grew-up. Parania was recognized for her exceptional Ukrainian embroidery, and taught many generations in this tradition. We would like to extend a special thanks to the Lasalle CLSC homecare nurse and neighbors for there help and caring.
Funeral service will take place on July 2nd 2020 at funerary complexes Yves Légaré – LaSalle (7200 Newman Blvd). Visitation will be from 10am-11am with Panachida prayer at 11am, followed by a mass in the funeral chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Saint John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Shrine in Ottawa.
