On March 11th at Boyne Lodge in Carman MB Ivy Alberta Rance passed away peacefully with family at her side 2020

On March 11th, 2020 at Boyne Lodge in Carman MB, Ivy Alberta Rance passed away peacefully, with family at her side.
Ivy was born on April 16, 1932, the second daughter of Albert and Edith Patterson of Boissevain MB. She was predeceased by her parents as well as her two sisters and their husbands, Florence (Lorne) McMillan of Winnipeg and Gladys (Ellery) Hammond of Carberry.
Ivy is survived by her devoted husband of sixty-four years, Cliff, their four children; Phyllis Boulton (Greg Stevens), Phillip Rance (Kelly), Bruce Rance and Blair Rance; their 7 grandchildren; Regan, Devin and Bill Boulton; Scott & Jeff Rance; and Curtis Rance; 8 great-grandchildren; Kiera, Thomas, Willie, Ryleigh & Liam Boulton; Rebecca Rance; and Alyvia & Colton Rance. She is also survived by her sisters’ children and their families.
After attending summer school in Winnipeg and obtaining a one year teaching permit, Ivy started her teaching career in Croydon, a country school south of Deloraine MB. She had a daily round trip walk of 5 miles and in the cold months had to start the wood burning stove to warm the classroom up. After her one year experience she returned to Winnipeg to attend Normal School and summer school to receive her permanent teaching certificate. She started teaching in Sperling in 1952 and over the next years her teaching spanned Grades 1 to 3 classes. She boarded with a wonderful couple who adopted the 3 single lady teachers under their roof as their own. The other two teachers become very close friends with Ivy. They had many adventures with the local young people and Ivy caught the eye of one of the local single gentlemen by the name of Cliff Rance. She returned to teaching short term after she married and had a family; Silver Plains, LaRiviere School, local Hutterite Colony; and substituting in the local school district. She even taught three of her own children at one time or another during her teaching years.
Ivy and Cliff were married in 1956 and produced 4 children over the next 6 years. During Cliff’s employment with MB Pool Elevators they moved to several communities with their growing family and later again when their nest emptied. They retired to Killarney in 1998 and lived in a lakeside cottage for the summer and travelled to Texas in the winter for over 20 years. Wherever Ivy and Cliff lived they became active in the community’s groups and enjoyed numerous social activities and entertaining. Ivy was a great hostess, offering food and drink to those who gathered around their table while visiting or playing games.
In 2012, when Ivy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, they moved to Carman to be in closer proximity to their family. Cliff was a loving caregiver throughout this time and as Ivy’s disease progressed, they continued with as many activities as possible (gardening, dancing, shuffling, visiting with family and friends and their daily walks). Ivy moved into Boyne Lodge in December 2017 and Cliff continued to be by her side on a daily basis. His love and companionship were unfailing throughout her illness.
Ivy’s family would like to express a sincere Thank You to all her caregivers during her stay at Boyne Lodge. In lieu of flowers, Ivy’s family invites family and friends to donate in Ivy’s memory to the Carman Chapters of Alzheimer’s Society Box 2193 and Carman Palliative Care Box 610, Carman MB R0G 0J0 or to the charity of their choice.
Memorial service plans are pending. A private burial interment will take place with family members prior to a memorial service.
