With heavy hearts we say goodbye to our loving mother, mother-in-law and grandmother Monica Mary Theresa Manning who passed away in St. John’s on Wednesday, May 6, 2020. Monica was the youngest and last surviving of 13 children born to Walter and Bridget Brennan in Ship Cove, a small community nestled along the beautiful Cape Shore in Placentia Bay. On May 9, 1960 she married her one true love and exceptional life partner Gerard (Gerry) Manning from Cuslett, Cape Shore. Together they brought their children into the world and created a warm, loving home and wonderful family life in Labrador City. They lived in Labrador City until retirement in 1994. Though it was a difficult decision to leave their home of 34 years, they began a very happy new chapter in their lives in St. John’s NL. Our precious mother was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. Though she embraced life she has missed our father, who passed away in 2010, dearly. This Saturday they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. We believe that she was determined to be with him for this milestone.
Monica was predeceased by her husband Gerard (Gerry), son Todd and son-in-law Fred Moffitt.; her parents Walter and Bridget Brennan; her brothers Bill (Aggie) , Mike, Larry (Lillian) and John; her sisters Kay Bragg (Gene), Mary Murphy (Leo), Annie Tobin-Coffey (Gerald, Gus), Till Kirby (Frank), Rita Walsh (Jack), Donnie Shea (Bill), Chris Collins (Reg) and Jeannie Walsh-Cormier (Eugene, Andy). She is predeceased by members of the Manning family including her parents-in-law Walter and Nora Manning, sister-in law Mary Ann English (Leo) and brothers-in-law John, Mick (Bridget), Walter (Julia), Leonard (Nora) and Allan; as well as members of the Culleton family Patrick and Catherine, Mary, Bride, Rita and Billy.
Left with loving and cherished memories are her daughter Anne Manning-Moffitt (Andrew and Sarah Moffitt) of Gander, NL; her son Glenn (Sylvie) Courtice, Ontario; granddaughters Rachel and Olivia Manning. Also leaving to mourn her sisters-in-law Nora Manning of Cuslett, NL, Mary Manning of Sackville, N.S. and brother-in-law Andy Cormier (Rejeanne) of Petit-Rocher, N.B. ; special family friends Clarence and Betty Culleton of Wabush along with a large number of nieces and nephews who dearly loved their Aunt Monica as well a very large circle of special friends and incredible neighbours all of whom have been a great source of strength and comfort to her and to us.
Our dear, kind, generous and devoted Mom, Nanny, Aunt and true friend, blessed our lives with her very warm, caring soul along with her wisdom. She was an amazing and inspiring role model, always demonstrating love, peace, kindness and concern for others throughout our lives.
She had a way of making everyone feel important and valued, retaining information about their lives and always asking for updates in her concerning and sincere manner. She had a special charisma that drew people toward her, engaging in meaningful interactions with all. Those who knew her felt blessed and privileged to be part of her circle.
In her presence, there was an essence of Godliness. Her faith and devotion to God, St. Anthony, St. Theresa and her fervent prayer for all was sincere. She prayed with devotion and true intention receiving peace in her heart in return. Her sleep was peaceful once her nightly rosary was completed.
Our family wishes to express sincere gratitude and thanks to our loving and large family and many wonderful friends who have reached out with kindness, love and support at this time. You’ve always been there for mom and for us. Cremation has taken place.
Visitation in accordance with Public Health guidelines will take place on Thursday, October 15 from 1 – 5 pm at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Friends and family are kindly reminded to keep their visits short to allow everyone an opportunity to celebrate Mom’s life at this time. Funeral service, to be held at Mary Queen of the World Church on Topsail Road, Friday, October 16 at 11:00 am, is by invitation only due to the COVD-19 government restrictions. However, the funeral service will be live-streamed at 11:00 am NL time through a link to be provided in this obituary as the funeral day approaches. Donations in her memory may be made to the ALS Society of NL, the Gathering Place or the St Vincent De Paul Society.
“I’d like the memory of me
to be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow
of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo
Whispering softly down the way,
of happy times and laughing
times and bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who
grieve, to dry before the sun,
Of happy memoires that I leave.
When life is done.”
