Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Mildred “Louise” MacDonald announce her passing on December 16, 2020 at the age of 95.
Louise was born on November 10, 1925 on a homestead near Rabbit Lake, SK to parents Petra and Anton Haryung. On September 20, 1947, Louise married Robert Douglas MacDonald and moved to a farm near Zealandia, SK.
Louise had a love of gardening, canning and raising animals, including the animals Douglas raised on his homestead. In 1981, Doug and Louise moved from the farm into a home they built in Zealandia. Louise spent many hours in her beautiful vegetable and flower gardens until she moved into the Rosetown Lion’s Manor in 2005. Later, in December 2018, Louise moved over to the Rose Villa at the age of 93.
Louise was very active in her community and the United Church throughout her entire life. She was an avid member of the local curling clubs, enjoying many bonspiels with friends. She drove the school bus for the Zealandia school for many years. Louise served as a Zealandia Town Council member for over a decade, a member of the U.C.W., a member of the Zealandia Royal Purple and also was on the board of stewards. Additionally, she helped organize and oversee the Zealandia United Church Fowl Supper for most of her adult life.
Louise had many hobbies and passions in her life: gardening, curling, knitting, quilt making, cooking and baking, hosting friends for coffee/tea to chat about the weather and community happenings; she was an avid card player (shark) attending a biweekly bridge game for several decades. Doug and Louise built a cabin at Meeting Lake, SK next to her brother Norman where she spent great summers with her grandchildren and reconnecting with her family and friends in the Rabbit Lake area.
Louise was a true matriarch and her most proud accomplishment was her family. She is survived by her daughter Helen Uhrich, daughter-in-law Verna Hogan; grandsons Cory (Tracey) Uhrich and Duane (Kareen) Hogan; granddaughters Amber and Bobbi Uhrich; great-grandchildren Josh, Brayden and Brienne Uhrich, Chloe Mattei, Autumn Carter, Colton, Corben and Carissa Hogan and great-great-grandson Jax Uhrich. Louise was predeceased by her parents, her husband Doug, her brothers Edward, Norman and Mervin, sisters-in-law Dolly, Margaret, Isabelle, Lillian and Winnie, brothers-in-law Johnny, Jimmy and Gordon, her son Bob MacDonald, son-in-law James Uhrich and her grandson-in-law Sergio Mattei.
The family wishes to send sincere thanks to the staff at the Rose Villa in Rosetown for the kind and compassionate care provided to Louise. Memorial donations kindly made in Louise’s honour may be directed to The Zealandia United Church, P.O. Box 1678, Rosetown, SK S0L 2V0 or Heartland Health Region (Rosetown & District Health Centre Long Term Care Activity Fund), P.O. Box 653, Rosetown, SK S0L 2V0.
