Diana May Meredith (Coldwell) died peacefully on March 16th, 2020, at the Jeffrey Hale Hospital in Quebec City. Predeceased by husband Clive (2019), son Ned (2012) and her brother James (2012), she leaves behind her daughter Helen, her son Will (Kirsten Andersen) and her grand-children Hazel and Simon. Diana left us just as the pandemic was beginning to change all our lives, though her death was not connected to Covid 19.
Mum was unassuming, quietly curious and smart. Her body gave out before her mind; she was doing New York Times crosswords and playing solitaire on her iPad until the day before she died.
Born and raised in England, she trained and worked as an occupational therapist. She boarded the MS Seven Seas in 1958 for new opportunities in Quebec City and beyond. She met Clive within days of arriving, though, and soon changed her plans. They were married from March of 1960 until Clive’s death, a year before her own.
Mum told us that she studied occupational therapy because she was good with her hands; her legacy lives on in her wood working, calligraphy, sewing, embroidery, tapestries, needlepoint and tote bags. She was keenly organized till the end, enjoyed finding homes for treasures, and knew just how much food to prepare for a party. Her homemade marmalade was legendary.
She served on school committees and the boards of the Quebec City YWCA, Champlain Regional College, and the Citadel Foundation. A loyal member of the congregation of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, she raised funds and helped carry out the restoration and conservation of altar frontals. During summers in Riviere-du-Loup she supported the work of the Manoir Fraser and the restoration of St. Bartholemew’s Church.
We thank the Jeffery Hale Community partners for the Day Centre, which Mum so valued as a way to stay connected in the last years of her life, and the palliative care ward of the Jeffery Hale Hospital which gave such thoughtful care in her last month of her life. In a ‘circle of life’ bit of balance, Mum’s life ended in the same hospital wing that formerly held the maternity ward where her children’s’ lives each began.
In her memory, toast Mum with a Gin and It and do a crossword puzzle.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the Diana Meredith Textile Conservation Fund at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, 31 rue des Jardins, Quebec, QC, G1R 4L6.
We hope Mum’s friends and relatives will join us for her funeral at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and burial at Mount Hermon Cemetery, both in Quebec City, when public health advisories allow. If you would like to be alerted of the date when it is set, please let us know.
