Obituary for
Maureen Williams
Williams, Maureen (nee Billings)
Maureen Williams was a loving mother, grandmother, wife and sister, devoted friend and proud Newfoundlander until the day she unexpectedly passed away.
Unfortunately, that day came far sooner than any of us ever expected.
On December 31, 2019, Maureen died in hospital, surrounded by family. She was 67 (but would hate for that number to be public.)
Maureen was born in the Newfoundland outport of St. Kyrans. She grew up on the island’s rocky coast and never let her daughters forget where they came from. Living more than 40 years in Ontario wasn’t enough to diminish her distinct Newfoundland accent or her love of home.
The weekend block parties on our Kitchener street growing up are some of legend. Forever perched in the kitchen window, keeping an eye on the goings on in the neighbourhood, the police used her observation skills to make her head of the neighbourhood watch. For many, she was the heart and soul of Sugar Maple Street.
She was the glue that kept our extended family together. Maureen always knew the goings on of every cousin and every member of the small Newfoundland communities where she lived. No matter how far away we ventured, we were always connected to loved ones back home.
She leaves behind husband Don Williams and daughters Cassie Williams (Matthew MacDonald) and Elyse Williams (Tyler Fillier).
She was the cherished Yaya of Graysen and Maverick, and Katrina Remillard, who was like a granddaughter.
Maureen is remembered by her brother Aloysius Billings, sisters Rosemary Whiffen, Elizabeth Brown, Theresa Warren, and dear friends Jenny Ryan and Agnes Billings.
She was predeceased by her father and mother, Michael and Helena Billings, sister Selena Billings, and brothers John and Joseph Billings.
Maureen’s family will receive relatives and friends from 12 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. A Memorial Liturgy will be held following the visitation, at 1:30 p.m. Cremation has taken place.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Food Bank of Waterloo Region would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
