Maudest’s Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Maudest Yurkiw announce his passing at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on May 16, 2020, at the age of 85 years.
Maudest was born at the Canora Union Hospital on May 6, 1935, to Anton and Kateryna (Stusek) Yurkiw. He proudly resided in Hyas, SK, until his passing.
Maudest attended school in Hyas and achieved his grade nine education. He started working at various jobs within the community, such as cleaning elevators, pitching hay for farmers, and doing custom painting of homes and barns in the area.
On September 14, 1961, Maudest married Doreen Tanasiuk from Stenen, SK. They were blessed with two children, Dianne and Kevin.
From 1962 until 1983, Maudest worked as a Shell Bulk Fuel Agent. He continued to work with Shell until 2002. Additionally, in 1983, Maudest and Doreen purchased the Hardware Store in Hyas.
Maudest also served the town of Hyas as Alderman and as a Board Member of the Gateway Lodge and Canora Hospital and was Vice President of the Hyas Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
In his spare time, he loved hunting, curling, fastball, slo-pitch, searching for precious metal and flying. Flying was a special passion of Maudest’s. He also coached the girl’s and boy’s hockey teams in Hyas, as well as the boy’s baseball team.
After their retirement, Maudest and Doreen enjoyed travelling – especially their trips to Alaska.
Following Doreen’s passing in 2007, Maudest spent his time with family and friends. He enjoyed this time with them and gratefully found companionship with Pauline Sawka. Maudest absolutely adored his grandchildren and loved hearing from them, especially about all their accomplishments.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Maudest was predeceased by the love of his life, Doreen; and his parents, Anton and Kateryna Yurkiw.
He is survived by his daughter, Dianne (Dale) Kluk of St. Albert, AB; son, Kevin (Leann) Yurkiw of Yorkton, SK; grandchildren: Alyssa Kluk of Saskatoon, SK, Matthew Kluk of St. Albert, AB, Skylar Yurkiw and Paige Yurkiw, both of Yorkton, SK; brother, Eugene Yurkiw of Edmonton, AB; and his friend and companion, Pauline Sawka; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Due to the global pandemic and social restrictions in place, a private family graveside service was held on May 20, 2020, at the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK, with Fr. Petro Tsenov officiating. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Maudest Yurkiw.
