It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Talbot on February 23, 2020 at Hospice Halifax. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late James and Peggy (O’Neill) Whelly. Mary grew up in Dartmouth in a large family and close-knit community. The nearby lakes were a big part of life and she enjoyed swimming and skating. As a teen, she was a member of Dartmouth Figure Skating Club. In later years, she enjoyed bowling and darts. Mary was the ultimate “people person”, able to speak with ease and warmth with anyone she met. It was an ideal quality for the volunteer work she performed and so dearly loved at Oakwood Terrace and St. Peter Church. Friends were always welcome at the family home on Hawthorne Street and a lot of fun was had by the pool where she and her late husband Ray often entertained. Their Christmas Eve “réveillons” were always much anticipated. She was famous for her homemade soups and there wasn’t a sick neighbour, friend or relative who went without a gift from her kitchen. She had a love of life and a love of music and was known to break into song to add levity or a musical theme to a situation. Her cancer diagnosis did not dampen her spirit. Mary and Ray shared many love and laughter filled years together. Some of her happiest memories were of the years they lived in Québec where she made lifelong friends, learned French and added many French Canadian recipes to her repertoire. Her beloved Ray’s death in 2012 was a great loss but she later found love again with Don. Together they enjoyed travel and companionship and remained devoted to each other to the end. Mary was most proud of her four children and eight grandchildren. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of two great-grandchildren this year and though she didn’t get to meet them, the anticipation gave her great joy. Besides her parents and husband, Ray Talbot, she was predeceased by brothers Jim, John, Emmett, Michael and Peter. She is survived by her loving partner Don Martell, children Kelly (Brian Corbett), Michelle (Gary Purcell), Kathleen (Gabriel Jones) and Dan (Jiwon Kim); grandchildren Colin (Joan), Stewart, Julia (Ben), Taylor (Zachary), Keira, Julien, Youngjae and Junoh; sisters Zetta and Clare (John McIntyre); and beloved extended family. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 27 at St. Peter Church, 10 Maple St, Dartmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Halifax, where Mary received exceptionally caring and compassionate end of life care.
