It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary (nee Antal) on Friday, June 5, 2020 at the age of 92 in Calgary.
Mary is lovingly remembered by her four children; daughters, Penny Edwards, Lenora (Terry) Lys, Karen (Geoff) Morrison; and son, Terry (Bev) Edwards; 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; special family friend, Connie Fessler; sister, Helen Vassos and family; sister-in-law, Vivian Antal and family; brother-in-law, Ken (Lee) Edwards and family; and the remaining family of her late husband Leonard.
Mary was born in Lestock, SK on October 24, 1927, the daughter of Steve and Margaret Antal and the eldest of three children. She attended all her school years there and upon graduation left for Regina, SK to attend Success Business College. She married her high school sweetheart, Leonard, on October 6, 1947 and followed him where his hockey career led. They spent a year in Trail, B.C. where Leonard played hockey with The Trail Smoke Eaters. Mary and Leonard settled in Melville, SK with Leonard playing hockey with the Melville Millionaires and began his career with Eaton’s Department Store. Mary’s own career was put on hold during this time. In September of 1949, while in Melville they began a family and had three children (Penny, Terry, Lenora). In 1963 they moved to Swift Current, SK where Leonard managed the Eaton’s Store. Two years later their fourth child (Karen) was born. The next several years were spent raising their family. Throughout these years at Melville and Swift Current, the cabin at Melville Beach was an integral part of family life. Many friends and memories were created from golfing to barn dances to picking saskatoon berries.
In 1975 Mary went to work for Woolworths/Woolco where she remained until her retirement in December 1987. During these years in Swift Current they were active members of Elmwood Golf Course, Kinsmens/Kinettes and The Oldtimer’s Hockey Association. Many wonderful friends and memories were made with these organizations. They also enjoyed their great neighbours on Golden Place.
In January 1988 they began their 22 years as snowbirds in Mesa, Arizona. Mom quickly embraced the many activities this lifestyle had to offer.
In the spring of 1992 they moved to Calgary, AB. They had many happy years here together until Dad’s passing in 2015. Mom remained in her own home where she was surrounded by caring and lovely neighbours.
In July 2018 she moved to Edgemont Retirement Residence. Mom’s social nature once again shone and she became involved in all activities offered. She became close to many staff members and thoroughly loved the many special friendships she made. Her love for the Blue Jays, curling, and many other sports continued. Hours were spent discussing world events with mom and she had an opinion on them all! Mom was exceptionally happy at Edgemont and lived life to the fullest.
Our mom was an incredible woman and amazing mother. She stood by us, was our biggest supporter and raised us to believe in ourselves. She was feisty and fun, always ready to play a game of cards, laugh with us or comfort us when we needed it. We will miss her dearly….. A comfort to us is knowing she is with Dad now.
