Mary Ann (Sutherland) Hemmings, 97, passed away suddenly at her home in Mulgrave on May 25, 2020. She was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on July 21, 1922 to parents David and Alice (Banfield) Sutherland. Mary gave back to her community in the many organizations in which she served. She was a member of both The Royal Canadian Legion Cambrai Branch #37 and its Ladies Auxiliary in the Town of Mulgrave. In 1992, Mary received the Meritorious Service Award – the highest award which can be made to a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for outstanding meritorious service to The Royal Canadian Legion.
From a young age, Mary was a determined woman who never shied away from a challenge. She was a founding member of the Mulgrave Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, served as Manager of the first Credit Union in Mulgrave, the first Director of the Emergency Management Office in Mulgrave, Manager of the Mulgrave Housing Authority, and was a member of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire. Mary was an active member in the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Mulgrave and was for a time the Superintendent of its Sunday School Program.
Many readers, young and old, who visited the Eastern Counties Regional Library in the 1970s, were assisted by Mary who served as Librarian. Later in life, she established M & B Ceramics providing weekly ceramics instruction and an evening of conversation to many in the Strait Area. Apart from her many civic contributions, Mary enjoyed hunting and fishing as a young woman, was an avid bird watcher, a talented seamstress, and enjoyed gardening.
Mary is survived and will be missed by her son William Jr., grandchildren Tammy (Carl); Toby (Victor); Tracey (Jeff); great-grandchildren Jordan, Kristian, Haleigh, Brooklyn and Jorja; and great-great grandchildren Kayden, Liam and Addalyn; sister Ruth MacDonald, brother Farrell (Betty Ann); sisters-in-law Irene (Cecil) Shaw, Evelyn (George) Sutherland; and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was predeceased by her husband William Hemmings; parents David and Alice (Banfield) Sutherland; brothers – Russell, Fred, Raymond, Alex and George; sister Fairlie, eleven sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.
Cremation has taken place. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private interment will take place at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Green’s Funeral Home, 507 Bernard Street, Port Hawkesbury. Donations can be made to the St. Andrew’s Anglican Church or a charity of your choice.
