McEACHERN, Marjorie Elizabeth “Marge” – age 83, Elm Street, Yarmouth, first woman elected mayor of Yarmouth, passed away suddenly on Monday, December 21, 2020 at the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born October 6, 1937 in Sydney, NS, she was the eldest child of the late Peter Leonard and the late Margaret (Mason) MacDonald. She grew up on Rigby Road in Sydney, and was proud to be graduate of the Holy Angels Convent School. She married her high school sweetheart, John Gerard “Gerry” McEachern, in 1957 and they began their loving journey together, first in Dartmouth and then on to Yarmouth in 1960, where Gerard worked in hospital administration and where they raised their family. Marjorie was a great mom and grandmother, but she was also a multifaceted woman with several careers: real estate agent, business owner (House of Shoes & Elegant Lady Boutique), politician (town councillor and two-term mayor of Yarmouth). She volunteered for many organizations including Girl Guides of Canada as District Commissioner, the Yarmouth Golf and Country Club as president, Meals on Wheels, Yarmouth Food Bank, St. Ambrose Catholic Church choir and the Catholic Women’s League. In retirement, she spent winters in Largo, Florida, with her husband Gerard who predeceased her in 2017. She will be lovingly missed by her children, John Peter “Jack” McEachern (Ina Amirault), Dartmouth; Margaret Claire “Marclaire” McEachern (Alan Martin), Largo, FL; Mary Catherine “Cathy” (Raymond “Ray”) Tynski, Yarmouth; Patricia Anne “Trish” McEachern (Darryl Jackson), Ottawa, as well as five grandchildren, Ryan Tynski, Adam Tynski (Lindsay), René (Lindsay) Fitzgerald, Andrew (Tammy) Shaw and Sarah Martin. She is also survived by a brother Alexander (Gerry) MacDonald and sisters Helen (Joseph) Kennedy, Ann MacDonald (Charlie) and Jane (Bobby) Burns, uncle Father James Mason, and best friend and sister-in-law Mary Kelly. Due to COVID restrictions, a family-only service will be held. Inurnment will be at Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery Columbarium in Yarmouth. Memorial donations may be made to the Yarmouth Hospital Foundation or the Yarmouth Food Bank. Arrangements are being handled by H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth.
