Madeleine Marie Claire Hicks
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Madeleine Hicks (nee Bienvenue) on December 8, 2020, at the age of 84 years old. She will be deeply missed by her children Geoff Hicks (Cindy), Randall Hicks (Wendy) and their daughter Claire Hicks, and Carolyn Hicks. Madeleine leaves behind her sister Denise North, sister-in-law Heather Kolla, brother-in-law Ken Hicks, and many nieces and nephews. Madeleine was predeceased by her parents, Emmanuel and Jeanne Bienvenue; her sisters Monique Spencer and Rita Bienvenue, and; her beloved husband Harold Hicks and son Daniel Hicks.
Madeleine was born the youngest of four children in 1936 “on the farm” in a vibrant homestead French community near Carleton, Saskatchewan. She attended St. Paul’s High School in Saskatoon and undertook a degree in Social Work at St. Thomas Moore College at the University of Saskatchewan. It was in Saskatoon that she met and married the love of her life, Harold Hicks. They went on to have four children and raised their family in Saskatoon, Edmonton and Brandon before settling on Winnipeg.
Growing up in a family community on the farm and Duck Lake, our family carried on with a tradition of wonderful family reunions that still continue today. Madeleine and Harold built their dream cottage in 1973 at Pelican Lake. The cottage became the family sanctuary, where they spent precious summers with family and life-long friends. Mom was an avid reader, figure skating enthusiast and an insatiable puzzler. She was a member of the Pelican Yacht Club for over 50 years of regattas, BBQs, the famous August-long Poker Derby.
Mom enjoyed Christmas almost as much as she enjoyed the lake. She was famous for her Christmas baking, which we always ate frozen right out of the freezer. She was equally famous for her Christmas stockings — each one customized with every small present individually wrapped. Of course, the stocking would eventually end with a Mandarin orange in the toe. We will miss you this Christmas Mom, but you will be the heart of all our Christmases to come.
Madeleine was well loved by her community at Ashbury Estates, and a devoted member of St. Timothy’s Catholic Parish in Winnipeg.
We send our thanks to Father Brian Trueman and Grace Grindean of St. Timothy’s, the staff at the Misericordia Hospital Transitional Unit and all the team at the Heath Sciences Centre that were so caring in keeping her safe, peaceful, and never alone.
A private family service will be held with a Celebration of Life to follow at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent the HSC Foundation COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund.
