OBITUARIES
Lydia Engel
1934 – 2020
It is with mixed emotions that we announce the passing of our Mother, Oma, Tante, Sister and friend Lydia Engel (Nee Lottis) at the age of 86. Lydia passed away at the Meadowood Personal Care Home on Dec 23, 2020. While we are so very saddened that we will no longer be able to spend time with her, we are glad that our mother was able to spend an amazing Christmas celebration in heaven with her Lord and Saviour.
Lydia was born to Gustav and Ottilie Lottis on Jan 15th, 1934, in Wincentowo, Poland. She immigrated to Canada on March 23rd, 1952 and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Lydia married Arnold Engel on
May 23, 1959 and together they had four children; Karin, Harold, Randy and Ingrid.
She is survived by her children, Karin (Gordon), Harold (Clarissa), Randy (Tammy) and son in law Ray, eight grand children and one great grandchild. She is also survived by her sisters Martha Dikau, Lili Kleiber, her sister in-law Cecile Molzahn, her cousin Eric Blum, many nieces and nephews along with lifelong friends from her church family at My Church Winnipeg formerly Immanuel Pentecostal Church. Lydia was predeceased by her parents, Gustav and Ottilie Lottis, husband Arnold, brothers Adolf, Heinrich, Gustav and sisters Sidonie, Alma, Martha, Elfreda, Erna and her daughter Ingrid.
Faith and family were the most important things in Lydia’s life. She was very involved at her local church, Immanuel Pentecostal Church now known as My Church Winnipeg, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, participated in the Women’s Ministry and many other activities and events. While her church life was important, it was her personal relationship with Jesus Christ that was the biggest influence in her life. She made sure to pass this on to her children and grandchildren and it was evident that the love of Christ and the care of others was foremost in her life.
Lydia was happiest when she was surrounded by her immediate and extended family. She always worked hard to foster times together with her siblings, in-laws and the multitude of nieces and nephews that came with large families. Gatherings were usually big events with plenty of food and fun. Birthdays and special occasions were celebrated around many dining-room tables, accompanied by plenty of great German cooking. Many years were spent together at the four cottages in St. Laurent Manitoba also affectionately known as ”DELM Estates” (Dikau, Engel, Lottis, Muller)
Arriving in Canada as an immigrant, Lydia took on many jobs to help the family income. She started her working career in a sewing factory, and throughout her life worked in a variety of jobs where she finally retired from housekeeping at the Riverview Healthcare Centre.
Lydia’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Meadowood Personal Care Home where Lydia spent the last few years of her life. The compassion of the nurses, health care aids, support workers and pastoral staff made Lydia feel loved and cared for. The family will be forever grateful.
A celebration of Lydia’s life will take place at 10:00 am Tuesday, December 29th, 2020 by invitation only. Please see the My church Winnipeg website at www.mychurchwinnipeg.ca for live stream and online viewing. A link will be provided at the top of the website prior to the service.
