Sampson, Lorna Joan (née McGowan)
Born July 21, 1930 in Kilmuir, Prince Edward Island, died peacefully with her daughters by her side at the Grace Manor, Ottawa on October 10, 2020. Daughter of Murdoch McGowan and his wife Lorna (née Weatherbie). Survived by her brother John McGowan (Carolyn) of Charlottetown. Predeceased by her brother Sidney McGowan (Jean) of Ottawa and her sister Jessie Rowe (Ron) of Oromocto, NB. Beloved wife of the late Dexter Reid Sampson. Loving mother of Margaret (Leona Crabb) and Elizabeth (Jan de Pater). Special Grandma of Dylan, Aaron, Ava and Nathan. Joan grew up in Kilmuir and was a graduate of Acadia University. She lived in Ottawa for over 50 years, also spending time in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, Cambridge, England, Almonte, Ontario and the Gatineau cottage. Joan was a dedicated teacher who taught at Horton Academy, Nepean High School and the genetics lab at Carleton University. She was an elder at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, a member of the WMS and IODE, and a volunteer with Friends of the Farm, the CHEO genetics program and the Hub, Almonte. She was proud to have served on the Board of the QCH and YMCA. Joan was talented at knitting, rug hooking, tapestry and sewing and was a wonderful cook. Due to COVID restrictions, funeral services will be private followed by interment in Auld Kirk Cemetery, Almonte. For those wishing to participate in person please register on the funeral home website. Please note that space is limited, however the service will also be live streamed using Zoom and information on viewing the service can be obtained from the family or by calling the funeral home. A special thanks to the caring staff at River Park Place, Fairview Manor and the Grace Manor for the wonderful care given to Joan over the past nine years.
