Obituary
Lawrence (“Fudge”) Lavkulik, of the city of Lethbridge, Alberta, beloved husband of Charlene Lavkulik, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness at Chinook Regional Hospital on June 1, 2020, at the age of 83 years.
Lawrence was born in Lethbridge on February 1, 1937 as the third child of Mary and Peter Lavkulik. At the age of four, his father passed and his mother remarried Mike Wakerich. After high school, he attended Radio College of Canada in Toronto. Upon graduation, he returned to work in Lethbridge at AGT (Telus), initially as a telephone service person and eventually as a highly respected senior manager for Southern Alberta. He remained with AGT for over 35 years before retiring at age 55. Upon retirement, he volunteered about 20 years at Chinook Regional Hospital, both in the gift shop and repairing the hospital TVs, proudly helping the hospital to save thousands of dollars.
Lawrence enjoyed travelling with his wife and love of his life Charlene. Activities included fishing at the family cabin at Duck Lake, Montana, camping throughout BC and Alberta, and swimming nearly daily for over 50 years at Fritz Sick Pool in Lethbridge. Talented with electronics, he could fix virtually anything and became known as “Mr. Fix-it” to many family and friends who would bring their old TVs, radios, and electronics for complicated, yet complimentary repairs. In his later years, he enjoyed working with computers and often “reformatted” computers as a simple pleasure. Known as a master prankster and great story teller to his friends and family, he had many funny stories to share. Extremely dedicated to family, Lawrence was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and spoke at great length about them to all.
Besides his loving wife Charlene, he is survived by his daughter Lori Savard of Edmonton (husband Michael Savard), daughter Jan Lavkulik of Lethbridge (husband Darren Tkach), and his son David Lavkulik of Toronto (wife Dorothy Stavrinos). As well, he has 7 grandchildren, Sean, Paul, Rochelle, and Heather Savard, Stephen, Rachel, and Andrea Tkach, Alexandra and Nicholas Lavkulik and 5 great grandchildren, Yasmin, Kasiya, and Darius Savard of Edmonton, Anna and Lila Hatch of Saskatoon. He is also survived by his younger brother Michael Wakerich (of Calgary), as well as numerous nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters Anne Strashok and Mary Kuchinsky (both of Edmonton). He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him. God bless you ‘Fudge’ and may you rest in peace.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Those who wish to make memorial donations can do so to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society.
