June Mary Skiffington was born October 25, 1930 in Timmins, Ontario. She passed away peacefully on June 17, 2020, and was reunited in heaven with her husband Albert who has been waiting for her for almost thirty years. She is survived by her children Deborah, Kim, Roxanne and Rusty (Pauline), five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
June was a telephone operator during the war, which is how she met the love of her life Albert. She was connecting a call he was making before he was to deploy. They started a conversation and he asked if they could meet before he left. She agreed. She then waited for him to return and the rest, as they say, is history.
June worked at the original Squamish Bakery for years (in the same location where the Sunflower Bakery is today), was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Women’s Auxiliary and the Tantalus Seniors Centre. You knew she was at her best when she was cheeky and sassy. She was quiet yet influential. She loved canaries and hummingbirds, fish and chips and the colour pink. She’d never turn down a good game of darts, Yahtzee or Jenga. Her favourite sport was curling. Not only could she watch it for hours, in her younger years, she was an avid competitor. She was even in charge of running the rink at Hendrix Lake (just outside 100 Mile House).
Her family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Cudmore, Shannon Falls Retirement Residence, Brandee at Vancouver Coastal Health and, most recently, the numerous doctors and nurses at Squamish General Hospital for the care and support they provided to June.
She was a gentle soul who did not want a fuss made in her passing. There will be a private family gathering to celebrate her life and to join her ashes with Albert’s on September 17, 2020 (their 70th wedding anniversary) at The Gardens Columbarium at Mount Garibaldi Cemetery.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Squamish Hospital Foundation.
A life so beautifully lived. A heart so deeply loved.
