Joseph Schwartz
May 15, 1928 – November 29, 2020
Devoted husband of Barbara (Chapnick). Loving father of Harold (Dana) and Steven (Rebecca). Proud grandfather of Corey (Carolyn), Marissa (Ari), David (Dena), Daniel (Jasmine), Jonathan and Michael. Great-grandfather of Lily and Ethan.
Joe was born in Botosani, Romania. He lived through the Fascist and Soviet occupations. He was a member of Betar Romania. After World War II ended, he had begun training as a dental technician.
In 1950, Joe immigrated to the new State of Israel. He proudly served in the IDF in the early 1950s. After completing his service, he worked initially as a manual laborer, and then as a dental technician in a lab in Tel Aviv.
Joe moved to Montreal in 1956, where he had family, later bringing his parents and brother to join him in Canada.
In Montreal, Joe worked in multiple jobs, first in a clothing factory, then opening a couple of his own clothing stores. He eventually built a successful clothing manufacturing company, SB Sportswear. This was transitioned to a second, extremely successful manufacturing endeavor in 1982. Grace Kniting, became one of the largest sweater producers in Canada. Joe retired slightly more than 10 years ago.
Fiercely independent and driven, he nevertheless maintained a wonderful sense of humor and a zest for being surrounded by friends and close family. He particularly enjoyed his daily breakfasts with his best friend and business partner.
Always a supporter of Israel and a proud Jew, he was generous and kind hearted. He found it very hard to say no.
A loving husband to Barbara for 61 years, an adoring father, a doting grandfather and great-grandfather, we will all miss him deeply. A private graveside service will take place.
