On May 9th, 2020 while the world was fighting a pandemic, our lives were forever changed, as Jose Faria Martins began his own fight for his life, after suffering a sudden and devastating stroke. Due to the restrictions of the pandemic, he was forced to battle in isolation for over 6 weeks in the ICU, with only FaceTime sessions from his family. He defied the odds and not only survived, but conquered many uphill battles throughout his long 11 week stay at Hamilton General Hospital. On July 24th, he courageously and peacefully took his last breath, while surrounded by his loving family. Born in Madalena, Pico, Açores on August 29th, 1955. He is survived by his beloved wife, Fatima Martins. Lovingly remembered by his family and friends, but especially his daughters, Sylvia Andrade (José Luis), Stacey Lim (Raymond), his sons, John and Jim Pimentel, his grandchildren Summer, Luca, Ashton, Myla, Tau and baby Tian. He was known to many as Joe, Jose Faria or even Big Joe. After 34 years of service at Ford Motor Company he finally retired, only to spend most of his free time working with his hands, building, learning new skills or trades, and having multiple projects on the go. He was described by many as hard working, reliable, strong, a family man, a dog lover, proud Picaroto, Sportinguista, friend to all, and everyone’s helper. He loved music and started playing in the Portuguese band back home in Pico, at age 11. He took great pleasure in his wine, barbeques, his favourite foods, good company and good conversation. The greatest of these loves was his family, who will forever miss his big smile, laugh and infamous hugs. The family would like to thank the staff at Hamilton General Hospital ICU and 7 West for all their hard work in caring for Joe. A special thanks to manager Kelly and nurses Josie and Noah, who went above and beyond any expectations. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 796 Upper Gage Ave., on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 from 4 – 9 p.m., with the vigil prayers at 8:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass, which is open to all, will be celebrated at St. Mary Catholic Church, 146 Park St. N., on Wednesday July 29, 2020 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow. DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS, MASKS ARE MANDATORY. VISITATION WILL BE SUBJECT TO RESTRICTIONS THAT MAY REQUIRE VISITORS TO WAIT TO MEET NUMBERS ALLOWED IN THE FUNERAL HOME AT ANY TIME.
