Obituary for
John Haasen
HAASEN, Johannes Marinus – Born February 15, 1923 in Omel, Netherlands to Hendrikus and Hendrika Haasen; died May 12, 2020 in Timmins, Ontario. He is mourned by his beloved wife of 68 years, Arnoldina Wilhelmina (nee van den Eerenbeemt) and his children and their spouses, Hendrika and Randy (Klippenstein), Frank and Ivy (nee Graham). He leaves memories to be cherished by his grandchildren Jonathan Haasen (Lyndi Buchar), Sonya Cernik (Michael), Edward Haasen, Katherine Klippenstein, and Gabriel Klippenstein. He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Damian Haasen (Aurela Kozmaqi), and McKenzie and Paisley Cernik. Lovingly remembered by his brothers, Marinus (Anna, deceased) of London and Harrie (Will) of Deurne and his surviving Dutch in-laws, Bert Claessens, Fien and Hein Schepers, and Sister Janis van den Eerenbeemt. “Ome Jan Haasen” will also be remembered by his many nieces and nephews in Canada and Nederland. John was predeceased by seven siblings and their spouses, Jost and Drieka Haasen, Teis and Jans Haasen, Bert and Dien Haasen, Louis and Hannaka Haasen, all of the Netherlands and Arnold and Jean Haasen, Peter and Tina Haasen, and Lisa and John Vlemmix of Canada. The family wishes to acknowledge the gift of John’s long and deep friendships with his brother-in-law Wim van de Wijnboom and Hans Ruijs, Pat Weir, and Ray Alarie.
John and Dina immigrated to Canada in 1954, with their young Hendrika, and were able to realize their goal of being dairy farmers by 1958. This enterprise combined John’s love of family and farming and eventually became an operation that included three generations. Participation at Sunday mass was central in John’s life and the family was at Nativity church even when it was good weather for haying. Both Hans and Pat were often to be found helping out on the farm. Yearly trips to see the Haasen family in Southern Ontario were the only reason worthy of taking a break from milking cows. Once John had more leisure, trips to the Netherlands to visit siblings, in-laws and their families were frequent. Inspired by his one sister Lisa, John, along with Dina, joined the seniors’ bowling league. John’s life was defined by his love of family, farming, faith and friends.
Enormous gratitude is extended to the staff of the Porcupine unit at Extendicare Timmins whose loving attention, in these difficult times, has been such a comfort to the family.
Monsignor Pat LaFleur led the family in a service to mark John’s passing. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the building fund for St. Anthony of Padua R. C. Church or The Lord’s Kitchen, both of Timmins, or a charity of your choice would be a welcome tribute.
