John Patrick Fisher 2020

John Patrick Fisher
May 30, 1970 – December 02, 2020

Passed away at the Health Sciences Centre Cardiac Care Unit on Dec 2, 2020, John P. Fisher, age 50 years, after a long illness of heart and kidney disease. Predeceased by his parents, Patsy (nee Greene) and Henry Fisher. John is also predeceased by uncles, Edward Greene, St. John’s, NL and Jack Greene, Dartmouth, NS, as well as aunt and uncle, Rosemary and Joe Chicanowicz of Massachusetts, USA.
Left with fond and loving memories are two aunts, Linda Halfyard Greene, St. John’s, NL and Elsie Huggard Greene, Dartmouth, NS, as well as 15 cousins in Canada and the United States. They will always remember John very fondly and he will never be forgotten.
John also leaves behind a veritable legion of friends, fans, former bandmates, and close acquaintances in the St. John’s arts community. He will be greatly missed.
Regardless of whether you knew him as John, Johnny, Johnny Fish, Fisher, or simply “Fish,” we all know that to know him, was to know someone truly special. A pioneer of the St. John’s punk scene and a staple of the local rock and alternative music scenes for decades, John made a lasting impact on this city’s music and artists. For John, music and life went hand in hand. Whether it was performing in one of his many bands, working for production companies, promoting and organizing shows, designing posters, making records, doing radio shows at CHMR, or collecting cover charge, he did it with genuine interest and passion. John struggled with his health on a number of levels in recent years. But his interest in music and life never waned, not even as the crushing reality of his increasingly serious health issues hit hard. And even though the lights on John’s stage have gone dark, his legacy lives on in the music he made and in the lives he touched. In his memory, tune your axe to drop D, break out the Marshall 412’s, fire up the 100 watt tube amps, stomp on the overdrives, and strike a few chords for the one and only Johnny Fish – the man of a thousand riffs.
Many thanks go out to the doctors and nursing staff of the CV-ICU, and CV-Special Care units at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s whose professionalism and compassion helped bring comfort to John in his final weeks. A very special thank you goes out to the staff at the Eastern Health Dialysis Unit at Mount Pearl Square who cared for John for several years. It should also be noted that John was truly touched by the outpouring of support he received on social media both before and after his recent surgery.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be announced at a later date due to current COVID-19 restrictions. Burial will be held at the Greene Family plot, Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Logy Bay Road, St. John’s, NL. R.I.P
Donations can be made in John’s name and memory to the Cochrane Centre here in St. John’s or to a charity of your choice.
