John Joseph McCabe
John Joseph McCabe died quietly in Camp Hill Veterans Hospital on 16 August 2020 surrounded by love. Born in Truro on 18th December 1926, he was a son of the late Lawrence Frederick and Lillian May (Coldwell) McCabe. John started his career with Canadian National Railway, Truro in 1946 until retirement in 1981. He worked for over 40 years in the labor movement in the Truro area and was past Union Representative for the employees of C.N.R. John was very active in the community and was past treasurer for the Truro and District Labor Council, past president of the Truro Softball Association, past president of the Main Brace Softball Team and past president of the Main Brace Naval Association, past president of the Emerson Club; C.N.R. Pension Association. John was a WWII Naval Veteran; and as such was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #26 Truro; and was a member of the Air Force Association of Canada, 102 Colchester Wing Truro. John and his wife, Irene were lifelong devoted members of The Immaculate Conception Church and took the time to visit and meditate there every day. He was an avid vegetable gardener and loved to play cards. Surviving him are his daughter, Mary (Greg) Nicol, Summerside, P.E.I.; sons, Lawrence “Larry” (Janet), Bridgetown, Paul (Sandra), Truro, close family friend, Wayne Chafe, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife of over seventy years, Irene Grace (Ripley); two children in infancy, Shauna Marie and Gerald Joseph; sisters, Margaret and Anna; brothers, William “Bill”, Francis, Ernest and George.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of V6 West Jubilee, Camp Hill Veterans Hospital, for their exceptional care and love shown to John over his lengthy time at Camp Hill. They were there to smile and enjoy his jokes and antics. To those family and friends who visited with John while he was at Camp Hill, we thank you for your devotion and support.
By invitation only – due to the current government gathering restrictions – a private Funeral Service in Celebration of John’s Life will be held in Truro at a later date. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital Garden Fund, Camp Hill in memory of John McCabe or to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
